While I was going home from work, I was being severely tail gated, to the point the guys headlights disappeared behind my rear bumper.. I then proceeded to call 911 (first time I ever called them), because I was starting to get worried, as when I switched lanes, this guy switched lanes too.. I couldn't shake him..

When I called 911, he then started to go around me, but at a seriously high speed.. The 911 operator wanted to know what his license plate number was, and what kind of car it was. I told them I would try my best to find out, but if I felt uncomfortable I was backing off, because the guy was going very fast.

The route, SR 417 Orlando FL. Speed limit 65Mph.. When I finally caught up with the guy, and told 911 what the car was and what his plate number was, I looked down at my speedometer, and it read 131MPh.. I was like "Operator, I'm slowing down immediately! I'm at 131MPh and I'm still loosing this guy, I don't want to risk my life or any one else's life.." They understood and very much agreed I stopped pursuit, and I told them had I known it was over 80Mph I would have already quit pursuit.

I then got off the highway, the same one this guy got off (which happened to be the same exit I had to take to get home), and when I got to the red light, I smelt a burning smell from my car.. I never smelt my car smell like this before, but I assume it was the tires, because it had a rubber smell to it. (I have regular tires, so i'd expect it, when I saw 131Mph!).

Got home, inspected my car, perfectly alright. Found out later (via scanner), that the guy WAS caught (awesome!!!!). But, damn, I was shocked, why would ANYONE drive above 130MPh on a highway!? That's a death wish! I didn't even know what the speed was until I looked at my speedometer.

I guess on a side note, I'm surprised my car handled it very well, minus the smell, but on another note, I'm scared shitless what these drivers think they can get away with!!

I caught the incident on video, but for legal reasons, I'd rather not show it, incase the police ask for the video (as I told them it was caught on tape with an iPhone app that records mph, and gps locations in real time on top of the video).

damn man, glad you and the car are ok. I'm glad that asshat got caught as well. I called the cops on a guy doing something similar, but I have no idea how it turned out.

As a Police Officer, all I can do is say.... once he passed you... you should have stopped.
'
Once you began chasing him, you became liable for making him feel "threatened for his life..."

Another thing ANY POLICE OFFICER will tell you.. You never use the words PURSUIT... and you never give your SPEED unless it shows a safe situation.... IE: "speeds are less than 20mph."

I dont want to critisize you.... but I want you to know how serious this could have been.... Once he passed you... and you began to pursue him.... had he crashed and hurt or killed someone else.... either your admission of CHASING him, or his statement saying you were chasing him and he was "in fear for his safety/life" you might as well tie the noose and kick the stool out.

I know the dispatcher asked you if you could provide a registration... thats a YES/NO question... NOT a request to pursue..... As he passes you.. you give the best description, and the best plate number you can see... and you STOP...

One final note...... There are some things that are going to work against you more..... You have a car that apears to be cloning a Police vehicle...... No matter what your justification is... it will NEVER look good....

ANd a FINAL FINAL note... your video showing speed.... pursuit....and other careless/reckless actions, can screw you... So dont think that is going to save you...

IM trying to be unbiased, but it is difficult because ......well, Im a Police Officer... and I have been in the situation where road rage occurs, and things escalate.... people chase people, accidents happen and people die and get hurt... it happens... and why....? Because one of the two people couldnt simply think/say..... THIS AINT WORTH IT, and back off....

Anyways... glad it turned out well... I do question why you did not mention that the Police did not contact you after catching said individual... Unless they simply stopped and released.... Because YOU are the complainant... YOU are the wittness to any wrong doings... so it would be you who needs to initiate the report..... It gets more complicated than that... but....you get the idea....

SERIOUSLY: rethink your "video" or "app/gps" thing..... If I got my hands on it from the guy admitting to chase another car at 130 mph on a recorded line... Id use it to charge criminally ... and I dont mean "SPEEDING."

I never thought of it that way, so thank you for that perspective. They never contacted me back, but I listened in on the radio to hear if they caught the guy or not, cause he pulled on local non-highway roads doing the same speed. On the local roads thats when I quit, those roads are so old and windy, it's not worth it..

I thought though if I matched his speed, it could be used against him as proof of speeding..

And on my car cloning a cop car, while I do like the idea of it looking like one, about the only thing it has to clone one is the wheels.. Most people in my area have CB antennas, and besides, cops in my area still use FM for their radios, not AM, so their antennas are far smaller than mine.. Not trying to defend, just saying.. I was already pulled over once in another city for dark tinted windows, when I don't even have tint on my windows, and it was stock tint in the glass.

When it comes to a lay witnesses assessment of the situation, you are allowed to say "He was going about 120" without any actual knowledge or expertise as to how fast he was going. In other words you did not have to know that he was going 131mph if you were able to simply give a reasonable estimation.

So you going into court to be a witness against him, you would be allowed to give an estimate of the guy's speed without knowing exactly how fast he was going.

Thanks for getting me pulled over!

I had a similiar story and ran into the asshat twice, the first time I saw the guy a buddy of mine were on the highway going into a construction zone that broke down into one lane and the guy kept trying to take the shoulder n stuff. Then two weeks latter I was with the g/f and same car stupid driving last time I saw him it was pouring rain and he pased two semis overtaking each other on the shoulder. Called the staties up because he was going to kill someone like that.
