My thermostat went out. Was thinking about running a 160 degree therm. My buddy is telling me I can't do it without removing my cats. Supposedly it will cause the engine to over fuel and burn the cats. Any one know the truth?

Not true, your exhaust temps (which are what warm up the O2's and cats) are the same regardless of coolant temp. IAT's along with O2 readings determine fueling in closed loop. Keep in mind you won't full see the lower operating temperature until your fans are programmed to come on sooner. Some who live in colder climates claim they don't get enough heat in the winter with a low temp t-stat but you still gonna have 170-185 operating temps with a 160 t-stat. If you not getting warm air with that you've got a heater core coolant flow issue.
