View Full Version : How to prevent car break-ins?

There have been a ton of car break-ins around me lately. My neighbor across the street had his brand new Jeep broken into (They busted the freakin window) and they stole his GPS system and a few other things. A friend of mine down the street had his avalanche broken into 2 weeks ago also, but IDK what was stolen from it (they also busted the window).
I dont have anything too valuable inside my Formula, but still.. It kinda stands out. Its parked outside too.
What can I do to help protect it from being broken into? I'm already looking at car alarms, but IDK what else I could do to protect it.
I just cant believe that people actually have the nerve to break into peoples cars and steal stuff that isnt theirs. IDK how they can justify this crap. Its rediculas. Instead of earning their own damn money, they steal shit from other people.

Well, I have the same thing in my neighborhood also. Left my radar dect. in the window this spring and they broke the window and took it but left my revo sunglasses on the visor alone...
My suggestion is to make sure nothing is "visible" to them...if it looks like there is nothing to steal then they usually move on to the next one where they know they are going to get something...
The stock alarm is worthless if the break a window. only if they are stupid enough to open the door...

Keep an ear out for loud noises, keep a gun by your side :D
Other than car alarms and physical violence when you catch them, I dont know what else you can do (just beat em' good before the cops get there).
If they were trying to steal the car itself, you could come up with some good power kill switches to the battery or something. Maybe even pull the coil wire or something real quick.....

Keep NOTHING in your car. That only is asking to have it broken in to. If you have or plan to install a stereo system, do a stealthy install, I.E. hide the amps and woofers.
Or, move to a place with a garage and park it inside. :D

I'm kinda bad about keeping things in my car. I have about $250 in detailing supplies in my trunk, and a carpet shampooer. I dont think anyone whos breaking into a car would want ot steal that, but ya never know.
I'll be taking all that stuff out tommrow and giving my Formula a good clean out (will probibly put that shampooer to good use and clean my carpets up while I'm at it).

Hey, what if the bad guys have a dirty car? :D
Fastbird is 100% right, the best idea is to keep NOTHING worth stealing in the car. Keep it inside.

Yup f-bodys are pretty easy to break in to because they don't have the frame above the windows. Don't keep anything valuable in it, because typically they won't break in to try to steal it. Also put an alarm on it. Other than that, buy a garage or make sure it has full coverage.

put a snake in your car... no lie though... that's what truck drivers do to make sure no one takes their stuff while they're away from their semis

Honestly, will just attract more attention to the car. It'll make it harder to get off without setting off the alarm but honestly doesn't make it much harder.

it would attract more attention to the car, but who would want to go through the trouble of taking a car cover off when there are 910748913581923 other cars down the street? Idk. If I was going to be stealing stuff out of people's cars, I would go right past a car with a cover. I guess it really all depends though. It's not like you get to meet the thief.

use a car cover.
That might be a good idea to help prevent it.. But wouldnt it make everything easier if they have already broken into the car?? Nobody would be able to tell or see anything, so wouldnt you be in the clear?
Plus... Its my Daily driver, and its typically windy here in the winter, so when ever I have to put my car cover on, I have to tie it down.. So that would be a bitch to do every day.

In all honesty there really is no %100 way to prevent a break in. If they want it then they'll get it! But there is some good advice given. Only thing I have a problem with is the car cover. Theives will see that and think the car must be very valuble and make it more of a target.

I'd just keep anything worth stealing out of the car. Sounds like they are stealing stuff out of cars, not the cars themselves. Just make sure there's nothing worth taking in there and I think you're good. I doubt they'll risk getting caught breaking into a car that's not going to net them some $$$.
If they really want in you're car, they'll get in it. Really, there's no avioding that. Its only so hard to break a window. Besides that, F-bodies are fairly easy to break into. The windows have so much room to be pulled out, you can easily get a hanger in there and press the unlock button. I have a buddy that only had one set of keys to his car and had it down to an art.

Invest on one of those pager alarm system where it will page you if one of the sensor is trip. I had one on my Grand National and it was worth it. I was at the movies one night and it went off. I went right out to the car and had some jackass leaning on the trunk lid. :shame:

LOL yeah right...
this neighborhood WAS the semi upscale neighborhood, back in the 70s-early 80s but there are several near here that now have more expensive houses and what not.. but since the HOA fees are $1000+ a year it pays for security and what not.
the ironic thing is several years ago (like back in the mid 90s or so) there was a string of burgleries and one of our former neighbors was going out of town and was worried about her garage being broken into due to a broken door... she really had nothing to worry about other than the fact taht her daughters boyfriend who was staying in her basement ended up being arrested for the burgleries

I live in a simi shitty neighborhood and actually just last night I look out my window and there's three dip shits leaning over my rear hatch (had my two JL audio Amps sitting on the deck back there) and by the time I got outside to have a discussion with them and my breaker bar they were gone. Nothing broken into but I did yank my stereo stuff. Called the police and let them know that there had been several people looking as if they were prawling cars to see what was in there and asked if the police would come down my street as they're patroling and was told "we don't do special patrols becaue someones afraid they're car will be broken into. You need to call us when something actually happens." Well, you know what you lousy POS bitch on the phone, if my alarm goes off I'll call the ambulance for the POS that I bashed in the face with my breaker bar. If you're trying to steal shit from me, you better just shoot me if you see me and you better make it count or your mommy will next see you in a box. Sorry, I hate piss poor thiefs.... get a real job douchebag!

If there are lights outside by your driveway, definitely leave those on at night. I guess that one's kind of obvious, but I wouldn't try to break into a car in a well lit area if I was a thief.
