can I put cap and rotor on a factory opti-spark or do I have to get the whole thing? Are certain brands any better than others? Thanks for the advice.

alot of people mix and match cap and rotors. If it were me, i'd just replace the whole unit. As far as brand wise, it's a hit or miss. I went with MSD and it died after 5k miles, i had an ebay chandlers and it started acting up after the first rainfall after it was installed. Some people have great luck with them some don't. I'm going to go with another acdelco whenever this one calls it quits im currently using a used one

Most will say ac delco. they lasst longer than anyone elses, I went with a chandler and it crapped out on me after about 4k. The opti is such a commonly failing part and a pita to get to so while your in there you might as well replace the whole thing.

Agreed with ^^ on an AC opti. I went with dynaspark but they have their random issues also. You'll find pro's and cos no matter what brand you go with. Several people have good luck with just an MSD cap and rotor kit and they loctite the rotor screws onto a stock opti. The MSD setup I think seals better than the stock cap if you want to use your old opti, but as was said before once your there it may not be a bad idea to just replace the whole thing and keep the one you take off as a spare.

well...... I'm an idiot. I thought it was ignition that was fouling out my plug, but the egr block off plate fell off and created all kinds of problems. I guess it was loose when I had it tuned, because now that everything is tightened up it is very rich. Can a car be so rich that it spits and sounds like it is very heavy in the throttle? When I get on it, it clears up and climbs pretty good. Then it takes a little bit of normal driving and it is back to spitting and gurgeling. 30# injectors at a 60% work load with a .515/.530 - .219/.227 @ .050 cam.
