tires for 17x11 rims???

may sound stupid, but will any other tire then a 315 fit on the rim? i have been doing a lot of looking and trying to finish up my wish list for my car, and now its come down to the tires i want to get for next summer. I'm probably going to get some Kumho Ecsta SPT's for the front, but cant find a lot of 315's. I'm looking for a good track tire(not drag, but road race). any suggestions are welcome.

Most vettes with the 17x11's had 295's. So maybe a 295/35ZR17?

I used to run 315/35s but I running 295/40s right now. I have these cheap yokohama avs sport tires on but i like them a ton better than my old 315/35/17 Sumitomo tires. I will be buying more of these yokohama tires.

ya i got the sumitomo HTZ's and i think there the worst tires ive ever had...but ill look in to the 295/40's
