View Full Version : New Addition to OUR family...

Some of you may know (from FB) that Miss POPO and I recently added another member to the family.....

Her name is Milla and we picked her up 2 days after V-day. I wanted to get her a dog, but I still have not outgrown my childhood allergies....

Milla is a 2 month old Female Ferret. According to the MARSHALL FARMS tatoos in her ear, she has been descented and neutered.

She is a ball of energy and incredibly smart, but best of all... she is SMART.

Bathed her the first night when we got her home, and so far, no smell comming from her (other than the smell of ferret food which she likes to play in)

It took us one day (less than 24 hours to get her liter trained), and she no longer makes messes, anywhere other than where she belongs. And she no longer trys to sleep in her liter box and shyt other places....

I know ferrets are a love em or hate em kinda animal, but, in these last few days, we have grown very close to her....

We still need to work on her nipping, but she is getting better.....

Here are a few pics.

Miss Popo even had the MAGIC TOUCH.... getting Milla to fall asleep in her hands....

I love love love her! She is a fast learner, she knows the sound of her treats now also and she knows she gets one after she uses her litter box as well as being reward for other good behavior that she is learning....She is still so young but such a smart little brat....I love her mischievous little attitude....<3

UPDATE: I think Milla is training us. We thought we were doing good with her, but I realized today, that when she wants to play, she makes enough noise to wake us up.... and we take her out and play with her till we are all worn out.

She has won our hearts....so much so that we are seriously considering getting another, a little boy in the near future! She is the best pet I have ever had, and I have ALWAYS been a cat person, I mean I never thought I could love any other animal the way I loved my cats but she is something special......She is so smart and seems to appreciate us as her care takers much more than a cat would....Anyway if you were considering a new kind of pet I would absolutely recommend a ferret....they are very rewarding to raise....

For those of you following our little growing family..... GUESS WHAT?????

I would like to introduce you to 2 month old ASSHTON..... Thats right MILLA and ASSHTON (for those that are familiar with that 70s show, however with a variance in spelling)

At 8 months old now, our little girl was becoming very demanding for play time, and shoing us that there were some times she as lonely.... When Miss Popo works, and when I head out (since my job hates me) she would sulk...... sooooo while we were out a few days ago, we stopped at PETCO, and MissPopo fell in love with a 2 month old little boy... He is soooo tiny and frail, but soooo full of energy...

Miss MILLA, is being a little sulky at times, and a little possessive of her stuff, but Im trying to give her EXTRA attention until she adjusts, which she is. However, when it is play time... ITS ON.... For those of you that are FB friends with me, you know what Im talking about......

Anyays, once again, 8 week old ASSHTON!

Thank You, and good eye... YES it is... when I did the last top end, I stocked up on as much tubing as I could, so I could increase the size, and re route it all..... What was left over that was clean... became her play stuff...

I agree, although I know that everyone loves their pet, no matter what it is......

SO, I say it like this.... I think that a well trained ferret is equal to a dog and a cat having a baby...... able to play alone and keep itself occupied..... happy to smother you as a human with attention, and vice versa.... and smart enough to be trained to do tricks and poop in a litter box...

For me the real kicker was that.... I was not allergic to them... Dogs and cats, YES....

Altho MILLA the little pne is over a year old now.... She will be celebratingbher first X-mas here with Miss Popo and I....

And Asshton, the big one...weighing in at 4 lbs ....isnt a year old yet so this will be his first X-mas ever...

I know many will look at them and thimk they are just ferrets...but unless u have had some or spent some time with them...u dont realize how smart they are...and unlike rodents...they are not just caged pets...

They are both liter trained and are accurate 95% of the time....they are happy on their own running around the house playing...or playing with us.

They botg do tricks...stand up...she will roll over....and he will play fetch with thes little pingpong balls with holes....

So anyways...just wanted to update and share

1309413095

Oh yeah...and they are both fixed and descented...so no they do not stink.

Well its been many years... Milla is now 6 years old, and Asshton is 5 years old.

Unfortunately it looks like we don't have much more time with Milla left.

She meets all the descriptors for being diabetic, and in ferrets, being diabetic is a death sentence, as it quickly progresses into a type of cancer.

She is having a hard time staying up right on her feet. She keeps having episodes where it seems like shes temporarily blind.

We are just trying to pay her lots of attention and keep her as happy and comfy as possible.

Normally a hand into her cage would have her out and begging to run around the house to playbwith ASSHTON... but that is no more.

She does... as dumb as it sounds I think she also knows how sad I am. She would never just stay with me... she always wants to play... but now she only fusses if I try to put her down. She only wants to lay with me.

I fear she is now going blind, and I dont want to be selfish and keep her around because I cant let go, if she is suffering.

I just dont know if I can go thru with putting her down. :(

I understand man, I really do. No where near the case here but I will say when our dog , Kota was nearing the end. Lauren's mom (Legally, her dog) kept pushing the date back we had set for the appointment saying she wasn't ready. She didn't live with the us and only visited once every 2 weeks and when she did; Kota put on his best front but it destroyed him for the next few days. I had to carry him upstairs to sleep and out to use the bathroom due to hip problems and dementia. I was upset we were dragging it out for his sake. After all that when the date came, she never showed up. I still haven't forgiven her for prolonging the inevitable and not even being there at the end.

The sadness will fade, and the less she suffers then better the memories of the good times are.

Well while were away... we boarded the ferts at the vet. The doc gave them an exam as well as blood work. Turns out our sick lil girl has insulimonia (shes diabetic), and that has bwen what has been happening to her... blood sugar drop.

A healthy fert should have a level above 75... closer to 100. Milla after a 4 hour fasting was a 40.

So diet change for both... no more sugars... and milla is now on steroid drops.

Hopefully this helps stretch out her life. I turned down surgery that could correct the issue, as Idk if her frail old self can handle it.

Well... it looks like we have another addition to our family... no, not a lil popo...

Meet Ponch, our chihuahua, yorkie, shitzu mix. Found a liter on line and after some drama with the lady, I was able to make a deal with her husband.

Oreo, is the black amd white female that we got for my father in law, as he is disabled and home 24/7... we planned to keep her here for a week to see if my allergies were still as bad as I remember...

Well, the wife loved him so much, she wanted the brown boy that was one of 3 in the liter, for us. Well the guy selling them told me that he sold the brown one after delivering Oreo, so I commited to buying the lil rotwiller colored one... and here he is...

Allergies seem ok for now, but we will see. They are both a hair over 8 weeks old and half the size of our ferrets.

The ferts are a bit jealous and upset right now (they poop on the floor when they are pissed). But we are slowly introducing them all, in hopes they can all play together...

But this post is about his sister that we got for my father in law...

Lil update on Ponch. He's been joining me on a lot of work functions. Yesterday we did my two community day. Actually at the request of the chief. Like a champ, in 80+ degree weather, Ponch greeted kids of all ages with me FOR 7 hours.

Well finally took him to the vet dentist... its a definite we need to have the teeth pulled... now here is the dilema...

If we have him fixed they can do the teeth during the same time for like 30 bucks more... (i wont say the total yet so it does not sway ur answers on the next question )

Do i want him fixed? Poor pup is only about 10 months old...

They say fixing prolongs a pets life. I really dont see a the point of keeping them intact unless you are planning on breeding them

Yes, neutering males prevents testicular cancer and enlargement of the prostate gland, and greatly reduces their risk for perianal tumors.

It also helps to prevent and / or reduce undesirable behaviors some dogs exhibit such as urine marking, humping, aggression, and the urge to roam.

If he was not old enough or developed enough the vet would not recommend or perform the surgery. Also completing this sooner than later helps to prevent the undesirable behaviors, as I have experience with older dogs that still have aggressive tendencies and urge to mark even after the procedure. It is best to get it early in my opinion to prevent them from developing these tendencies.

Ive started researching and everything u guys say is correct... but... im also reading that fixing dogs also puts them at higher risk for many other diseases/health issues that they wouldn't normally be threatened by.

Ugh...

Interesting - I did a search on risks pertaining to neutering and see your point. This website seemed to have some good data and detail concerning benefits and risks.

http://www.dogs4dogs.com/blog/2015/02/03/spaying-and-neutering-new-warnings-about-health-problems/

I always just kind of went by what I had heard in the past and didn't research any health risks from the procedure. Now looking at this I don't know that I would do it, or at least not until a later age.

If you don't have issues with marking or aggressive behavior now, then you may not have it later either. I have had male dogs that marked and did not mark that were not neutered, or at least not neutered until a later age on one.

I would probably keep him intact if it were me for now based on this information, as it appears the health risks outweigh the benefits and it is relatively easy to prevent unwanted breeding by being a responsible pet owner.

Well 2day was the day. Mrs Popo took Ponch to the vet this am while i went in for my eye surgery.

We just got the call that they removed all of his excess teeth, amd hes awake and seems to be doing well...

One extra tooth was extremly "deep" and required sutchers after removal.

We get to pick him up in 4.5 hrs... they keep him for observation.

Well, its with great sadness that I say we put both Milla and Asshton down this eve

The two have been struggling for a while, and we really tried lots of proceedures and meds to help their quality of life.

However with Milla (the older of the two at 7 years old) was covered in cancerous lumps, and Asshton is also suspected to have cancer as well as having gone blind, their lives were nothing more than misreable, interupted with some sweet/fun moments.

Ive never had to put a pet down, but because of my job, Im around death probably more than most peopel ever should be... sometimes so ugly and gruesome... but I was not prepared how it would be this evening... especially with my wife taking it so hard.

Well, its over now, and they are no longwr suffering... I had planned ahead and dug the grave a few weeks ago after we made the appointment, while the ground was still soft...

And tonight, by the lights of the jeep showing me the way, the two were placed together in the casket we got for them, the way they always were... UNSEPERABLE, FOREVER

Guess this will be the end of this thread, but for now... some pics....
