What will happen if you rev the stock PCM past 7k? Will it cut off? Will it keep going? Will it take me back to 1985?

there have been a few people to go past 7k without the PCM freakin out
Taner Bosnali is one of them.he has changed the set up to F.A.S.T but he ran 10.6 w/factory PCM look him up on Ls1tech...

I was always under the impression that it will cut off at 7200 as there is not any more range in the tables.

7200 is max, still a little flaky there.

In short, Yes. Dont try it unless you like Hair Metal.

As for a real answer, like others said... Its a tossup, depends on how the PCM is feeling that day apparently :D

Did not know that, Too add to the O.P's question what box would be reccomended after the PCM isnt sufficient enough?

F.A.S.T. makes a real nice aftermarket setup, dont they?

I know they just came out with a new "black box" recently looks like thats the direction I'm headed. Thanks alot, time for more research.

It's a very popular and seems to be a nice piece. I've seen a handful of cars with the F.A.S.T. PCMs, and all those guys seem to really be happy with them.

Yes they do :D i absolutely love mine....

Slowdime, the black box you speak of is almost identical to the normal XFI... With the exception of Traction control added. I considered doing the upgrade but decided against it after realizing that most of the classes I can run in forbid stuff like that.

FWIW, after hanging around a bunch of the local Stock Suspension Drag Radial guys... FAST is the way to go for Supercharged or Nitrous applications. BigStuff 3 is the way to go for anything turbocharged. Apparently, even though they are very similar in capabilities, the BS3 is just more refined and does a better job altogether.

I shift my stock PCM at 7k. About 7200, it starts breaking up almost like a rev limiter. There is a guy making a set up to run an LS1 PCM and coil packs in place of the lt1 pcm and opti. The prototype is a very nice set up. LS1 pcms will go to 8k. I need the higher rpms, but cant spend the $2500 on the fast xfi. Im hoping the LS1 set up will be cheaper and plan on going that route.

This sounds very interesting. Who is the guy doing this?

I found the limits of the stock PCM a few years ago which is 7200. This is why I had to go FAST XFI. As said above it acts like a rev limiter.

How much did the FAST XFI set you back?

OUCH! Looks like I will be keeping the car under 7k for a while.:frustrated:

The problem appears to be that the ecm can't fire the injecter drivers fast enough.

Heard there was a few Factory freak pcms out there that went past the 7k. With out problems. F.A.S.T seems the way to go. Wish i had that kind of cash to gamble with on a stock car.

I've ran my pcm well over 7000 rpms and I wouldn't worry about it. Just make sure you turn off your flux capicator.

Well lets put it this way. SOme days it runs the juice into it and some days it is just fine no heads or tails. I have th elight set at 6,900 and it usually starts to cut out just before the shift occurs at 7,100 or so. It is worse in first to second then second to third.

Ed verified it starts to shut the injectors down..

I figured the Opti would start cuttin out before the ignition would but it does make sense. I've just never seen the problem yet on mine.

Mine is the same as Ellis. On Eds dyno, its starts to break up and you can watch the injector duty cycle start going crazy. Mine made it to 7200. My light is set at 6800 cause Im a little slow lol.

Yeah, if your looking to go past 7k I'd go with a F.A.S.T. XFI

It's not a problem with the ignition but the problem is with the fuel injector drivers.

So what is the problem with the Optispark that everybody has problems with. They only go to a certain rpm also right?

jakesz28

The only rpm issue with the opti that I know of is the rotor tend to come apart ocasionally.
