In the never ending ADHD fueled boredom of ruining this car, I present, this, BMW parts!
Pump is a CWA400, which allegedly will flow 58gpm with a 8psi head. Its a hell of a pump compared to the free flow rated 55gpm I have on the motor now.
https://i.imgur.com/Ui3qgq3l.jpg
After verifying pump worked on the bench, roughed it into the car for some trial live running
https://i.imgur.com/WIJqwwQl.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/nttz4T1l.jpg
Currently have no thermostat in the motor and I blocked the bypass port in water pump housing. I will need to now mount the pump for a test drive and fine tuning of the PWM table. Goal is of course to slowly ramp in pump as heat calls for and have it set for a proactive ramp in based off of TPS.
Moral of story, never buy a holley that allows for this sort of behavior.

Was concerned with the height relationship between rad cap and EWP, but so far has proved to be not an issue.
Quick data pull from today's lunch break.
This is the fan settings, so 20% fan speed
https://i.imgur.com/8xtTnmgl.jpg
And the water pump settings, 52% of pump speed.
https://i.imgur.com/aNrXO6Rl.jpg
I did not pick the 168* ECT as a goal, was thinking I would shoot for 180* but, guess this pump moves some water. Previously at a idle warm up, it would run right to full fan settings at 185* area.

Pulled the bumper cover off, and "fixed" the intercooler mount. I had caught something with the lower brackets and it bent the thing inwards towards radiator.
So bent stuff back to where it should be, replaced the 90* aluminum I had as a base with a straight steel piece. (you can see the aluminum on the ground).
The hope is that the opening from air dam is now larger and maybe it runs cooler on highway.
Used some of the radiator fan mounts to mount trans cooler to intercooler.
Also wired in a relay so the low oil sensor will work properly now via Holley dash.
Tmmr is oil change, curious how this stuff works.

Well, had a dream I could fix my lack of working dipstick over this weekend. Lesson there, there's never hope when working on LTX cars.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51922074150_d090ea8edd.jpg
Tried my best to be safe working on gravel, snagged some scrap home depot wood for 7 bucks and made some bases.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51921788009_5788bd4d77.jpg
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51921549683_69057e8b56.jpg
You can see here how the lokar cable was sitting on this flat piece and the "tongue" part of the dipstick was stuck udner that lip.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51921549508_5cc3323e64.jpg
In the end, I managed to properly measure how much oil is needed before it hits windage tray. Which for anyone who is concerned, is 6.25 qts, and with a full oil filter, system total is 7qt.
Downside, I could not manage to make the lokar dipstick work, would not clear past the main cap. So amazon claims to be delivering a OEM one today and maybe it will work.

I would keep it -1deg or less if you're not doing twisty things. I always run 0 toe also, even on the track car. You can boost the caster up to 5.5+ deg and it will make the steering feel much sharper and more responsive, but will take more effort to turn.

drag cars need camber to be correct on launch when the nose lifts, so some negative helps it not go too positive, but yea, gissi is more knowledgeable
Sent from my SM-S908U using TapatalkAh gotcha. I run -2.25/+6.5 camber/caster and do a bunch of street driving, hasn't murdered me yet. You can get away with a lot.

I thought castor was a locked thing on these cars?Nah the kmember has a slot for the rear bushing on the front LCA that controls it, although it does affect camber slightly. There isn't a whole lot of adjustment, but there are aftermarket uppers that will give you more range. I have the GW ones on my bird.

Ok gents, looks like I have room in garage to setup string so may tackle this over the weekend.
Looks like the camber side to side is not even, so looking on where I should start with that. Picture below is what I have, so my thought is to slide both non adjustable sides into the K member and start from there?

yes, but, to adjust the caster (rod end) you have to pull the arm out of both holes. i would personally just make the rod end stick out evenly on both arms, then go from there.
Catmaigne
06-09-2023, 09:58 AM
You're gonna have to make slip plates to do caster. I was going to make some using acrylic sheet stacked up with some lithium grease in between. I may or may not give that a shot next week (depends on if they let me sneak my junk onto the alignment rack at work).

Never seen it done that way before lol, but I dunno how trustworthy that part of the casting is. I wouldn't mess with it if the car drives straight.
The best way is with slip plates and a +/- 20° sweep.

Yea after doing more research I'm gonna ignore caster and just get camber/toe where I want it. From what I gather the caster angle shouldn't affect tire life just steering feel?

More caster means more camber gain when the wheel is turned, but this won't matter if you're just street driving. It also makes the steering feel a lot quicker (less dead zone in the center).

Ok initial numbers from rear look fine to me, I don't have a adjustable panhard so chasing a 1/8 in the rear isn't worth a new PH bar. Any thoughts on that? I may see if I can center the rear up in the wheel wells since the LCAs are adjustable.
Front wheel camber looks good on passenger side and reverse what I want on the driver side.

Yea the last of the factory stuff was hacked to hell after years of younger me not knowing any better. Circuits didn't follow oem schematics so troubleshooting was a nightmare and I wanted to finish pushing for a clean slate electrically across the car.

The pedal should feel a little firmer, but the biggest difference is gonna be when you're on the verge of lockup or when you lockup and have to recover real fast. The firewall flexes a ton, SSlowBoat have someone pump the pedal while you watch from the engine bay side and you'll see it.

I gotta make one, going in the garage now

A quick study on the pistons....Looks like the are made by Racetec Pistons. Racetec forged are 2618 alloy. These are Autotec low expansion 4032 alloy.

Not bad of a seal, maybe a tiny leak between 3 & 5

And the reason for the season, wet, oily plugs

Waiting for leak down tester to arrive today

Hey, Merry Christmas. Nice work bench. Mine are nearly the same, down both walls of the shop. If you decide to mount the vice, mount it close to the leg and double the plywood under it. Then use long 1/2" bolts all the way through with thick washers. (This is what I did to mine after a serious hammer beating session nearly broke it off the bench. Thennnn, after reinforcing the bench mount, I broke the vise in half. LOL, Harbor Freight wouldn't warranty it. I bought a beefier vise and haven't broken it YET.

After a rough start realizing my argon was empty, snagged a new fill at lunch today
https://i.imgur.com/EMKXi3il.jpg
Then I managed to snap the bolt on my Vband, but metal hot glue gun and a old bolt made short work of that
https://i.imgur.com/69MKRLMl.jpg
Much more room now, and can actually get a wrench on crank to do rockers etc. Previously compressor housing was about ten mils off balancer.
https://i.imgur.com/OxbvQa5l.jpg
Downside, is radiator is shoved hard up against the car and turbo is tight
https://i.imgur.com/ZWqUXkCl.jpg
Should I just chop front off and get the RSM front end? Probably.

Tilt the rad forward by drilling 3 new holes in the upper rad support. It'll probably clear the hood.

After a lot of going back and forth with myself.. decided to cut. Will need to figure out top mounts, but bottom is mounted to lower rad support. Gotta finish up the hose roughing in then take everything out to clean up edges and weld hotside.

Now have clearance on both sides of compressor housing
