Well here's the deal. I've been searching and searching on the Internet and filling my brain with info on the infamous CC306 cam. And I think I'm to the point know where I have gather so much information I don't know what I know anymore. So I decided to do yet another thread about the CC306So here's my story. I'll try and make it short. A while back I got a cc306 and 1.6 RR. With a set of ported heads and intake. I no longer have the heads and intake as I decided I didn't want to tear that far into the engine. Well now here I am with the heads off of my car. Car is a 97. M6. Stock rear/3.42. Long tubes w/slp loudmouth. Ram air. 58mm bbk. msd opti....My dilemma is I have heard so many mixed reviews on running the cc306 in a stock bottom end and headed car. I do plan on port matching the heads and intake and cleaning them up a tad. Than I'm going to send them out to get them milled and have a valve job done(keeping stock valves). I'm going to use mr gasket head gaskets(the thin ones) to bump up compression along with the head milling to help with the cam.I also have access to a tuner who will be dyne tuning the car. I realize the cam works best with wicked flowing heads. And real high rpms. Unfortunately my budget is going to be maxed out with the head milling, valve job, head gaskets, and the rest of the bs to out it back together. My questions are. Is that enough head work/compression increase to compliment the cam compared to stock? The car may never see the track and is basically a "nice day" car for a few days a week to beat around town/highway in. Are you guys who are running a Similar setup, with similar usage happy? I talked to the Comptech line and told him basically what I stated above. he recommend I run the 306 and that with the correct tune it will be a blast for what I want to do. I just wanted to get some opinions from the ltx fam. And hopefully some more specific advice for my setup/needs.

gasket match the intake ports and the manifold then Polish the exhaust ports You don't have 3.73 gears I'd suggest the Comp cams 503 with stock heads and internals but you could run it just go with new valve springs and lifters. Expect 350-375 rwhp when dialed in. Nice idle sound but the 230 degree cams surge and are a pain in traffic. For cruising great bracket racing great. Daily driving no. Main reason heads run out of air and the stock shortblock at 6300-6400RPM shift points deteriorates faster several have spun rod bearings at this RPM horsepower level.

Ok. Is there a way to degree the cam?like in old skill applications? What exactly is cam surge? I'm I going to hate the car in 6th gear driving to the beach every once in a while? Thanks a bunch for the good info

You can "degree" the cam...technically. Problem is when you go to slap on the cam gear for the timing set, it will only go on one way since the opti pin/drive has to slip through the timing gear hole. At that point, you can only adjust "mechnical" timing of the cam by jumping teeth on the timing set. Each tooth throws the timing off by 2 or 4 degrees (I can't remember the exact number). So I guess the short answer is...no need to degree the cam (especially with an off the shelf grind). Make sure #1 is at TDC, install crank gear and cam gear, line up the timing marks, and the cam is "technically degreed."

Cam surge (as best as I can explain it) is caused by a large overlapped cam causing uneven manifold pressure at low rpms. The car sounds like it is literally surging "rpms increasing/decreasing at a steady rate." It causes the car to "buck"...definitely felt more in automatic cars. I am sure someone elese can chime in on here and give you a better description...Hope this helps

That def helps. I think with what I'm looking for I will be happy with this cam. It's tough making decisions when you research something that's been beaten to death. Cam surge I can deal with. I have a 59 el camino withe a pretty wicked cam in the 327 and that has surge. I always thought it was missing until I started doing research on the topic. Any of you guys running the 306? How do you like it?

Someone I know (certainly not a friend of mine, but one of those people you know because he just messes up so much) ran a cc306 in his stock bottom end, stock headed LT1. He beat the piss out of it and ended up dropping a valve. Mind you, he didnt bother replacing valvesprings or pushrods when he did the cam swap...Honestly, I was impressed by how long the motor actually held up.

Do the cam swap properly (rockers, springs, pushrods, tune etc.) and you shouldn't have a problem. The cc306 makes decent power on stock cars...it certainly would benefit from some intake porting/gasket matching though. If you already have the cam, save the money, slap it in, and have a good time.

That's exactly what I was hoping someone would say. I have newer pushrods, lifters, and the correct spring setup to go on the heads. So I'll be getting all of that done as well. I' drive the car hard. Very har but I don't beat it. There is a difference.so I think I should be ok

I have a fair amount of cam surge in my car. I drove it daily for 3 years and just got used to it.

Mine doesn't surge and runs well on stock heads. Run's high 11's.

I have it and am very happy with it. At the moment the car is stock headed and it is daily driven from April till the end of October. You get used to the cam surge tough i have a m6.

Aweomse. I was pretty bummed while I was doing all this research. I'm glad I made this thread. I'm pumped to keep moving with the build now.
