View Full Version : WTF have I got myself into...

Well, after enough time of winning against guys I really shouldn't have I knew this would happen eventually.

I have guys that run retarded fast wanting to race me. It's hard for me to say "no", but I never like a race that won't be a good one, or that won't be at least somewhat close. I don't like racing guys who run 13's in the 1/4 the same I don't like racing guys who run 8's in the quarter. It's pointless, and a slaughter.

My car has never seen anything faster than a low 11 at the track. On the street, my best kill was against a LS1 Camaro that runs 10.1 at the track.

Now, I have a Chevy S-10 truck that runs a mid 9 off the spray that wants to race (a low 9 to possibly an 8 on the spray). We actually raced once before. It was partially my own fault for staging the race as we did. We started at a 3 MPH roll. My car was around 1,000 RPM. He instantly got 5 good car lengths on me, but once I got my car in the powerband he didn't really go anywhere, and by around 80, I even started to inch closer.

He wants to run again, this time in a better power band for me. I should still loose considerably, but am actually happy my car is not getting destroyed by a 9 second vehicle.

The next and bigger opponent;

A mid 90's RX-7. He still has a rotory engine, but has been known to run faster than a 10 second 1/4 mile, and this time he has an even better setup than he had before (since the motor blew up on the last combo). He is very secretive on what he has done, but I have an inside source that claims an 88mm turbo (he was running a 76mm turbo last time), and I am guessing he is putting down north of 750 RWHP. Good Gawd! Compared to my small 614 RWHP heavier Camaro I just don't know what I am thinking.

My only prayer is that I can get him out of the hole good enough to put him behind far enough he won't catch up by the quarter mile. We'll see.

We are trying to setup a race (the RX-7) tomorrow night. Any suggestions? I am yanking all extra weight I can out of the car, removing the plastic under bumper piece that covers my air filter (hoping for another pound of boost or so). What tire pressure should I run my Nitto drag radials at? I usually have them about 35 psi, and that hooks okay, but I think I am wanting to drop the psi, and get them hot so I can really drop it from a higher RPM.

Thoughts??

holy crap 35 psi for racing? I always dropped to at least 20 when racing.

As for as quater numbers it all goes to shit on the street. Your car seems to hook up pretty goo though, the rotary is going to be to light to hook up all that power.

I'll see how dropping the psi to 20 does'on the street. I did get him to stay on street tires, so lets hope your thoery hold true about traction from a dig.

750+whp and what, 200ft/lbs of torque? If you hook from the launch you'll have a considerably good jump on him. I see him reeling you in at a greater speed though with that weight/power. Are you going to record the runs? Would be an interesting watch!

Yank the dead weight, get some other weight out as well if you want to like door bars, front sway bar, etc, etc. Pump those front tires up rock hard. Clean that air filter. If you have a solid day to work on your car, you can get 150lbs out wihout anyone really knowing.

if your car has 2 horns remove one of them

I am confident I will get him out of the hole (just depends on how much). We agreed to also do a kick. At which, he should destroy me with little effort.

I just picked up a camera man for the evening  However, with an extra body, this means someone is going to have the weight advantage. I might have him ride with me for the kick, then with him for the roll. We'll see, but it seems as though its on like Donkey Kong for this evening!

Oh good lord! I will pull what I can EASILY put back in the car, but its not worth it to me to go quite that nutz on weight reduction over this. It is mearly a friendly race, meant more for fun than an arch enemy of whom I would want to claim Ulitimate Victory over at all cost.

FWIW a local guy here took a stock Z28 SS hood and gutted the underside. Then he reinforced it with some thin fiberglass resin. He put it on with hood pins instead of the hood latch mechanism. The hood itself is now 30lbs lighter than it was, and shedding the latch mechanism saved another 6lbs. Winter project for you!

Mine is an aftermarket fiberglass hood. I don't know what it weighs, but I know its a bit lighter than factory. Thank you for the tips!

I just got back from the race....

I will post the video up tomorrow when I am done editing it.

We only got 1 race in, and the footage was "okay" at best. It was on my video camera, not a cell phone or anything that lousy, but the camera doesn't focus awesome in low light. I will edit it to be as clear as I can, and post it up as soon as I can. (Sorry no spoilers)

Is it still bad? It works every time for me.

If so, I'l put up another link.

T (http://www.vimeo.com/29162939)his link should work.

Spoke with the guy again yesterday. On top of obvious traction issues, he says he blew up his motor on the race. Excuse or not, I have a feeling we will be lining up again sometime.

Lol good god he had to fuck something up that bad to have a car that weights considerably less and get spanked that bad with more power.

Are you running any meth on your set up?
