View Full Version : 3.73 or 4.10?
Hi guys, I've got a '94 camaro m6 with mods in sig. The car used to be an auto car so I've got 3.23's in the rear so I'm wanting to switch these out for something a little more fitting of a 6spd. I am having trouble deciding on what I want to switch to, either 3.73's or 4.10's. I plan on taking it to the track probably 2-3 times a season. Also planning on running MT DR's on the car as I know with either of these, traction is going to be an issue. Thanx for your input

The 3.73's are a good all around gear, but if you're seeking to move the fastest down the track, the 4.10's are a better choice. Having had both, the car definitely felt more potent with the 4.10's.

I agree. I haven't had both gears, but I love my 4.10's.

there is a similar post like this but M6 and 4.10s here and would not change it:D
4.10s sound good, but would I be able to get traction? and what kind of milage difference can I expect. I quite often find myself cruising the highway at around 80mph, Would that make much of a difference?

I haven't gotten my speedo re-calibrated, but i'd guess you're at about 2100 @ 80mph?
As for traction, its pretty hard for me to floor it in 1st without spinning, sometimes 2nd. But you'll learn to keep it under control, you just can't floor it as abruptly in first and 2nd. I'm on some cheap BFGoodrich g-force's too tho
BUT, i wouldn't recommend going with DR's with 4.10's in your 7.5"
bad news there

i just read your sig that you had the cc503 and head work.. traction is gonna be a big problem for you..
i only have CAI lol
then do you think 3.73's would be a better option? Then I could safely use DR'S without having to worry as much?

there's no such thing as a safe dr on a 7.5", it may last a while but it is a ticking time bomb. I have 3.73's in my car, car very rarely gets a highway run, but they only hurt it a couple mpg's though, city though, no difference, and since the headers and magnaflow cat back, I've gained almost two full mpg's and still on stock tune. Used dad's garmin to figure the speedo difference, only 10% from the stock 3.42's to the 3.73's, so my mileage numbers are as acurate as they were before the gear change, and I am very happy with my 3.73's.

Is it your daily driver? And are you worried about gas milage? If you arent, get the 4.11's. If you are, the 3.73's would be a better choice IMO. You just gotta get it to hook though with whatever you decide.

During the summer the car kinda becomes my daily driver. What can I say, I can't resist riding around in a nice car:D

I'd probibly go with The 3.73's then.

Yeah 3.73s are a better cruiser street/ strip gear. I currently have 4.10s and although i love the acceleration with them, i dont need all that gear for riding around.

There's always 3.90's if u don't wanna do 4.10's
With the cam and head work, you might trap too high in the 1/4 for the 4.10s unless you run a tall tire. Im stretching out 4th gear pretty long but I feel if I were to shift to 5th, I would not benefit from it.
I say you swap in the 3.90's!
Don't get my wrong, I love me some 4.10 action :)
I wasn't aware of 3.90's being an option. how are they as far as strength. I know people always talk about 4.10's not holding up as well as 3.73's. I would assume 3.90's are somwhere in the middle??

Either will wake your car up some, but the general rule of thumb for our Fbodies are 4.10s in an M6 car and 3.73s in an auto.

4.10s for sure. Still only pull 2K @ 65ish

my 4.10s work out quite well for me in a few ways.
i can launch my car on radials and when it starts to spin i ease up on the throttle then roll back into it and you can feel the car flat out accelerating.
from a roll it gets with the program,it seems to always have a sweet spot!
at the track i come across the line at 57-5900 rpm(hard to tell with factory tach)on 26"tires.
on the highway i can actually use 6th gear!:D
I do a lot of highway travel, cruising around 75-80 usually, around what RPM will I be sitting at at those speeds? I am really leaning toward 4.10, but want to still be able to hook on the street. I guess if I use your method 96lt1m6 I could get away with it. I didn't really plan on going with tires any wider than the 255's, but I do have 3 chrome ZR1 wheels sitting around... maybe i'll just use those instead of the Chrome Pontiac 5 stars that I have on there now. But I really like the way they look:(

what do you usually trap? just to get an idea. judging from your sig, I will probably trap a little higher assuming I can get my damn tune right. so that would mean i could have to shift and be at the bottom of a gear at the end of the 1/4.

i trap 105 but that is with a nasty bogg off the line.you want to go across the line in the top of 4th gear.your mods should be around 6-6200 through the lights @115 or so..
