View Full Version : Debate...Over or Under the axle. Kooks Dual exhaust

I've been thinking about changing up my exhaust. I currently have Pacesetter Long tubes, Summit Manual cutouts, Summit universal 3" x-pipe and SLP loudmouths dumped at the axle.

I've been interested in the Kooks design. I've also wondered what the kooks mufflers sound like on an LT1. so i was going to mimic the kooks true dual setup. I can't seem to find any dual tips without having to donate an organ to get, so i was going to get slashed tips until i can find a pair of dual tips. I was thinking since i have 18" tires on the rear i have a tad bit more clearance if i go under the axle.

The debate:

i bought these mufflers http://www.summitracing.com/parts/KOK-R300-10/ summit will ship them monday.
and the slashed tips i'll just buy from the shop since they're the same price online vs the shop

!) I was thinking of getting a narrower x pipe and mimic the kooks setup over the axle

2) Keep my summit x pipe and run the pipes under the axle after the kooks mufflers

any thoughts and opinions on this??

heres how my current exhaust sounds with the cutouts closed

Why have cutouts with the loudmouths? lol.... I would go over the axle, under seems kinda half-assed to me. Not to mention clearance.

If you have the means then ...by all means do over the axle.

I am thinking of going under the axle on mine just cause it's considerably cheaper and I can weld it up myself... soon as I get some gas.

it don't take much to be quieter then a LM1 "muffler" so you could try and just replace them with the kooks mufflers and see what it sounds like first. I also think the dumped look is a lot more aggressive looking, atleast to enthusiasts so I may be a lil biased.

If only I had a formula, I could be content with my dumps. I hate the exhaust holes left empty in my rear bumper.

What color is your car? You could do a satin black CETA mod and the lack of tips might be less noticeable.

i ended up putting the kooks mufflers on....way too quiet for me. I went under the axle and it actually picked up my x pipe just a little bit and the clearance is really good, i don't scrape anymore. I'll post up a video of the kooks mufflers

I actually like the idea of a "quiet" bullet muffler. Cant wait for the vid. What do the guts of the muffler look like? Straight through or chambered?

Straight through. Identical to dynomax. When I get home from work I'll put up the video

Notice the clearance under the axle

I like it. Sounds a lot cleaner than the Loudmouth mufflers. You ought to get some driveby videos. Looks like you have great ground clearence to. Has your axle came down and hit the exhaust?

they're off the car now and i put the loudmouths back on. I'm actually selling my kooks mufflers, too quiet for me. The clearance is great and no the axle does not touch the exhaust when on a lift or while im jacking it up.
