View Full Version : Do you think this will yeild more boost gains?

Okay, so I had my air filter located in the front drivers side fender. It was a large aftermarket K&N air filter, but its location only drew in the surrounding air (in an enclosed area).
Now, I have relocated the air filter more towards the ground just to the side of the air dam for the radiator. It is open to the outside air now, and I also fabbed up a metal inlet to the filter, directing air to the filter.
I still have 300ish miles left on the new clutch to break in before I can go WOT to find what if any difference will be, but I am anxious to find what the results are. Last time I jumped up to a larger filter and different metal air inlet I gained 5 pounds of boost, and 100 RWHP! I am not expecting that kind of difference here, but I would think I could see at least a few pounds of boost increase.
What do you think I will see?

so you didn't change anything, no pulley or tune or anything, and picked up 100rwhp from just a filter and inlet swap? What size boost pulley are you running now? Were you just not hitting full boost for that pulley before? either way, thats the best K&N gains from a filter swap I've heard. Nice work!

The filter was twice the size of the other one and the metal inlet was also larger. No other changes, other than another hundred to the wheels!
Off topic... Do you ever drive the car in the rain?
Actually on topic. Yes I do and I am concerned this may be an issue. I try not to drive it in the rain, but sometimes it happens. Maybe I should figure out something to block the air inlet to the filter if it does rain?

nice do u have any pics of the blower inlet setup u have. i think u might get cooler air if the radiator heat dont blow right onto the filter.

I'll try to get some pics later. The only thing I don't like is that the bottom of the filter is right up against the plastic splash guard to air flow there is not as good as it could be, while other parts, air is being rammed against the filter.
Last night was the first I was able to open up to WOT (was breaking in a clutch before). It was a fairly hot and humid night, and I was able to see 14#'s of boost. I believe I remember seeing around 13#'s on similar conditioned runs, so a probably 1# gain was seen. More running will find out more. Tonight I will have the car out again, but it is almost 7pm here and its still 90+ degrees and very humid, so the conditions still are not ideal. In the fall when the humidity goes down, and the temps get in the lower 50's, if then I see more than 15#'s of boost, then I will know this is successfull.
I still don't know exactly what to do if it rains, as I could see the water also being rammed against the filter, which is not what I want.

what size inlet pipe are you running? we picked up 4.5lbs by switching to a 4" pipe on a t-trim.

The same size that is on the inlet of the D1SC. Whatever it is, trust me, it could not be any larger. As it is, it nearly hits the first header primary.

SOLID 4 INCH INLET all the way from the blowers inlet with a biggest filter that will fit......cant get any better.....
