I am going to replace the timing cover gaskets and seals while I am waiting for my Opti to be rebuilt by MSD
Anyways, every repair manual I have seen says that you have to take off the oil pan.
Is this true?
Its weird because in the Chiltons, it shows the oil pan still there?
what gives?
is there a lip in there that sits inside the oil pan, or is it just to not mess up the oil pan gasket?

you dont have to take it out but you will need to unbolt it and pull it down. the front of the timing cover is actually the front of the oil pan. you can do it just be careful not to rip the oil pan gasket, its a BI**H. good luck man

Fortunately, I have the Felpro blue rubber 1 piece gasket on the oil pan, I dont see that thing tearing easily

I had a one piece felpro gaskets and it easily ripped. I tried to pry it out back when I was new to lt1s. It was glued to the timing cover.

yes be very careful or they will tear doesn't matter if its new or old if its been run then its got hot and its got soft an will stretch easy, and hope the gasket is not glued to the cover or its gonna suck. take the first 4 ban bolts out, then just loosen the rest a little bit an the pan will come down a good bit in the front.

And remember if it gets ripped, u gotta pull the pan and its tough to do in the car. I had to pull the intake and pick the engine up with a cherry pickers to replace oil pan gasket.

Yea I know, I did the oil pan not too long ago. I had to drop the K-member way more than I was comfortable doing

Getting it out with the pan on is easy, getting it back in without tearing it is the tough part.
I don't have much room between my pan and my rack so I have to raise the motor up off its mounts just to get enough room to get it in.

I just got done doing the same thing in my 93, taking it off was easy but putting it back on was a pain in the ass because I had to squeeze the front seal onto the pan while putting the timing cover back on at the same time and took forever but I eventually got it and put a little extra silcone on for insurance.
