I took some time today and decided to install the GM cargo lamp that you would normally find in the convertible 4th gen's. It's surprising that GM did not install these units from the factory on all 4th gen's ? I've owned a bunch of 3rd gen cars (All GTA's and one convertible 92) and every one had a nice cargo lamp, for some strange reason GM only put these in convertibles. After finishing the install you would swear this thing came from the factory, installed. I actually pinned out the wiring harness so It would work just like the factory convertible. Unit powers up when you lift the rear-hatch or open a door. I used a super bright (3x1watt) 3 watt LED rigid loop super white. It looks fantastic in person.

You will need to cut an opening in the rear cargo material, but GM provide a rectangular opening in the metal brace just behind your cut. You will want to measure twice and cut once (like the old saying). I would recommend undercutting just a little to make it snug (you only get once chance).

I didn't realize they didn't put those in hard-top cars. Is there a light on hatch anywhere?

IIRC, they only install cargo lights on 4th gen convertibles ? I have never seen a 4th gen coupe with a cargo light, always a dome light.

Thanks

I know this is an super old thread, but I like this and want to add it into mine, since there's apparently no clear dome light cover and it dims out the red I put in really bad. This would be a great supplement IMO. How would you wire one of these into a coupe?

Even if they're all gone, I found one for sale for like $15 shipped on Ebay, just wondering where to wire the power in to, ground is easy to do. Would want it to light up the same as the map/dome lights whenever the doors or hatch are opened.

That's what I was thinking, just have no idea where to get to that wire and don't want to pull my headliner lol. Hoping someone can clue me in on the easiest spot to get to it.

If you give me a few days I will pull the car cover off and look to see what wires I tapped. IIRC, I think it was triggered off the dome light. This was definitely not a difficult project. It probably took me longer to actually cut the hole for the light than it did for the install, LOL. You might also want to get a nice LED light for the holder. I have a 3 watt SMD and it is bright.

Planning to drop in a red 9 LED festoon to match the rest of my interior. I'd definitely appreciate you checking where you tapped in to! Btw are you still in DFW?

Well, got my trunk lamp in the mail today. Time to start fiddling with this, since I can't find squat for info about this thing anywhere online. Gonna need to find a 2-prong female plug for it that I can use to wire in, too.

Posted my own how-to install on this mod in my LED write-up. Thanks for the idea, OP!
