as in road racing and autocross. hopefully in the next week i'll be picking up a 6spd 95 z28 that i will use the drivetrain out of in my car and will be starting to get into some of the auto-x events around here and even out onto some of the road courses like road atlanta and roebling road. anyone else here done some true road racing in their lt1's that could share some knowledge?

i was going to auto-x with the a4 before the motor went south, but i refuse to get on a road course with an automatic. so now that i'll have a 6spd...
what kind of pointers can you give as far as things that NEED to be done to the car to stand up to the abuse? i'm not so worried about making it handle better or go faster, just the parts that will wear out fast/break when it gets beat on like that. i'll worry about the go fast part as my skill improves

these cars are fun to go around the the track or autox ... what you NEED is a set of good brakes (don't wast money on crossdrilled rotors, maybe slotted but
I wouldn't) the slot are area for gases to escape but less area for the pads to grip. bigger is better in that department it allows you to brake later and they dont heat up as fast (hot brakes= no stopping power)
track tires are the other thing you NEED TO SPENT THE MONEY ON. I bet you never thought that track slicks that are 275's up front would be on your car but that is more contact with sticky rubber helping stop
Autocrossing is all about speed up as fast as you can the slow down just enough to make the corner and speed back up. and in our cars it is a never ending battle against understeer :(
and this is what happens with crappy tires trying to come out of a turn too hard when they they let go!!
i did the same as the V8 miata (5.0 mustang motor)

i would also like 2 giv it a try. they have a pretty good autocross at the good guys event here where i live. i thought about doin it the last 2 years but always backed out when the time came. i had a friend in college that was pretty into it and tried 2 get me to go to several events but i never made it 2 them either, i dont know why i always seem 2 back out b/c it def looks like a lot of fun.

i already know about sticky tires. i have a new set of toyo r888's on the back right now and will be going to some on the front when funds allow too. i also know about getting some brake pads/fluid that can stand the heat. what about ss brake lines? are they as useful for a 4th gen as they are on other cars? or how about a p/s cooler?

if your roadracing that might not be a bad idea but for autox you wont need the cooler and as for the pads get HD pads not race pads. race pads work better hot but perform very poorly on a car that drives on the streets because they never get hot enough

i plan to have a set of track pads to swap in at the track or just before heading there. won't do any street time one them unless i have to
just waiting on income taxes to get back so i can order my wishlist, then when its running i'll be looking for my first HPDE or autoX. can't wait! i've rode along at an autoX before but never driven, and i've never even been to a road course. i'm itching to get started

for a road course i would get track pads but in autox your car doesnt heat in the brakes for the first several turns ... just buy some heavy duty pads street for auto x ... race pads are a waste in auto x;)

I got to ride in a car with a co owner of CHIN Racing at Road Atlanta. It was one of the funnest times Ive ever had in my life. We rode in a slightly modified Acura NSX. Performance wise Id compare it to a bolt on LT1 but good God that thing would stop. I cant tell you how scary it was the first time we went from 160+ to 40 mph on the big straight away to the sharp left turn. :jest: We went probably 10 laps and the G's wore on me a little. She explained to me how when exitting the track to not touch the brakes as much as possible to allow them to cool without damaging anything.
There were all kinds of cars there. A $500k ferrari factory race car, a built third gen Trans am, a built LS1 camaro, all kinds of Jap imports, lambos, and a shit load of corvettes. It was awesome seeing those guys beat on the exotics like they were disposable. The sound of the Ferrari and Lambo going WOT down the front stretch was just something Ive never heard before and was pure sex.
The LS1 camaro got squirlly once on the front stretched and was fishtailing about halfway down it. He said he was pushing over 450 to the wheels and had full suspension. There was a Saleen Mustang there that pancaked the whole side of the car.
I would LOVE to build a road race car.I think you have to have race tires and brakes. I think they require a five point harness to. You also have to get the car safety inspected to run with them. They advertise the most track time for the least money. The first few sessions you participate in you ride with an instructor in a line with other beginners, and once you get advanced you get free reign. However it isnt racing, its just timed laps. They travel all of north america to all the big track but stop at road atlanta 2 or 3 times a year. When I get older and get some more cash flow coming in Im definitly going to do it. Drag racing is fun but theres just something about going over 100mph, then slowing down to 50 and slinging it around some corners.
I have some pictures somewhere Ill see if I can find them.
