i recently did a timming belt and water pump on a 99 hyundai elantra 2.0l for a friend. well i got it all back together and reset the crank timming piston #1 to tdc and lined up the cams with the factory timming marks.. put it all back together and now it wont start it just keeps turning over and over with no intention on starting anyone know what the problem might be? i think ive taken this thing apart and reset and checked the timming like 20 freaking times and i just cant figure it out.. please help

Are you getting spark and fuel? This issue screams crank/cam sensor

yes im getting spark and fuel.. i pulled all the plugs and and connected them back to the wires and laid them on the intake and turned the key to make sure they were all sparking.. all are firing.. and they reaked of fuel so theres fuel also or at least it smells like it.. the cranks/cam sensor is on the flywheel side of the motor which i never touched..

everyone keeps saying timing.. this is a stupid question and i feel really dumb by asking it.. i need to get the #1 cyl. to top dead center of the compression stroke.. how do i know its on the compression stroke if the timming is off from the crank to the cam?? i have the valve cover off and can see the cam lobes so i can see which are open and which are not.. i can find tdc no problem i just need to know if its on the compression stroke..

TDC of the compression stroke: if you have a hose that you can stick down in the spark plug hole of #1 it will bump your finger off with the compression when bumping the motor over. The motor should have turned much just from taking the timing belt off. Might have gotten it 180 off.

sounds like it may be 180 out

Install damper pulley flange and crankshaft sprocket as shown. Pay close attention to their mounting direction.
Install the camshaft sprocket and tighten the bolt, to the specified torque. Tightening torque: Camshaft sprocket bolt: 100 - 120 Nm (1000 - 1200 kg.cm, 74 - 89 ft. lbs.)
Align the timing marks of the camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket with the No. 1 piston placed at top dead center and its compression stroke.
Install the timing belt tensioner and idler pulley.
Install the timing belt on the camshaft.
When the timing belt is installed on the camshaft sprocket, make sure that the tension side pulley is pushing the belt toward the water pump.
Turn the crankshaft one turn in operating direction (clockwise) and realign crankshaft sprocket timing mark. CAUTION: Do not turn the crankshaft in a counterclockwise direction. The crankshaft should be turned smoothly. Tightening torque: Tensioner pulley installing bolt: 43 - 55 Nm (430 - 550 kg.cm, 32 - 41 ft. lbs.)
Then recheck the belt tension. The tension side of timing belt is pushed in horizontally with a moderate force [approximately2 kg (20 N, 5 lbs.)] , the timing belt cog end is approximately 4 - 6 mm (0.16 - 0.24 inch) away.
Install the timing belt cover. Tightening torque: Timing belt cover bolt: 8 - 10 Nm (80 - 100 kg.cm, 6 - 7.4 ft. lbs.)
Install the crankshaft pulley. In this case, make sure that the crankshaft sprocket pin fits the small hole in the pulley. Tightening torque: Crankshaft pulley bolt: 170 - 180 Nm (1700 - 1800 kg.cm, 125 - 133 ft. lbs.)
Install the coolant pump pulley.
Install the drive belt (http://library.alldatapro.com.proxy01.elizabethtown.kctcs .edu/alldata/LIB%7EC33354%7ER0%7EOD%7EN/0/70910848/78322799/78322820/78322822/34853741/100411974/34853743/34872050) and adjust the belt tension.

You need to do a leak down test to check the valves.
