View Full Version : Really dont like the LTx at the moment
So since ive removed the blower last week, the car is obviously slow. Yesterday I wanted to see just how slow it was, and i got beat, twice. My friend with a 86 nissan 300z that we have been working on for awhile, hasnt beat me since way back when i had DSMs, stock ones at that. We went out, him on 15psi and bald street tires, me N/A on the drag radials. I only got him 3/4-1 car out of the hole, and through 3rd he pulled even, through 4th he would pull just around a car or so.
Anyway, this motor has no power, the stock heads are so bad that even with the cam if i go over 5500 the tach just about stops. Now i dont know what to do, i was gonna leave it for the year and just get re-tuned, but now i think im gonna have to pull out the $ a year early and do the 80mm turbo. Or heads, i want a different exhaust so im leaning toward the turbo and sell my complete exhaust to make up some cash, either way its pretty depressing.
Oh, and i got beat by a almost stock 98 LS1 camaro. I had him until the top of 4th, but he was passing me so fast i just let off. I figure im right around 310-320whp and 360wtq, basically what a stock ls1 will do, and i have full bolt ons and a cam. You guys are gonna need to convince me not to sell this motor and put a 6.0L in it cause im very tempted.

What cam do you have? Obviously the answer is to re-install the blower.
the blower is sold, supposedly, im waiting on the M/O in the mail.
I have no idea what the cam is, its a Bauer blower grind for this motor, never got the specs yet.

I love turbo's but they are some work to get tuned and fabricate. I'd say figure out wether you want forced induction or N/A before you buy anything since FI engines are a whole other anmial compression wise vs. N/A. Now your problem is a FI cam running N/A! I'm sure if your used to driving with boost a stock engine feels like a huge turd!

Its so slow because you have the wrong cam for your set up. 5500 and stops? You should be winding it out to 6100+ NA if you want to make good power.

Agree! Im runnin my boost built motor na also. I had a procharger and it was a royal PIA, so I sold it.:( I took the money from the blower and had the heads worked over and milled to get compression back up to around 10.1 from 9.6:1. While by no means do I think it's fast, but it's beat a few cammed, full bolt on ls1's. Even ran within a car length from procharged m6 gto up to 140(old tune too). He made 490whp on a mustang dyno. I also have no problem spinnin my motor upwards of 6400 rpm. It pulls there so quick out of first, you cant hardly shift it any lower, thats with stock 3.42 gear also. My cam is just a 230/236 545 555 114 custom grind. So makes me wonder if the op needs a new set of valve springs or somethin is up with his valvetrain.
I think the combination of the cam and a very comprimised 2-bar SD tune is most of the problem. I havent gotten into those cells N/A and i set them quite rich to avoid any problems. If i had the new wideband in it I could probably tell you its running 10.x:1 AFRs in there, as i expect. Anyway Im done with it for the year, shes washed up and put away. Ill just have to see how the winter goes, still havent gotten any money for the blower so maybe it will go back on, might have to resell it if anyone is interested again.

Kinglt1 brought up a good point I overlooked, valve springs may also play a roll in the rpm problem!
no, brand new comp 918s with Ti retainers. I could spin it to 7k with the blower

Yea its your tune then, I was assuming you tuned it after you pulled the blower!
