The factory water pump is cam driven.

It can help for cooling while racing too, because you can cut the engine off and still circulate coolant through the engine

hmm.. maybe i'll have to upgrade then.. too bad i already replaced my water pump..

There are actually mixed opinions about this mod . . . it does free up a couple horse power but at the same time an electric pump always spins at the same rate . . . so when your engine is at low rpm it is actually cooling better than the oem pump, but at high rpm the oem pumps more because it is driven off the cam. while the electric is still pumping the same . . . the electric also doesn't have the longjevity that the oem pump has either

when it all comes down to it it's you choice, just thought you should know some more facts

I've got a CSR electric pump on my Impala. When I had the cam swapped out a couple of months ago I went ahead and had the pump put on. No issues so far.

I wouldn't do it to mine, but that's because it's my DD.

I want one just so I can cool it in the staging lanes.... but I have about 1/8 in between my water pump and electric fan.

x3 I just did a water pump swap and decided to replace it with a oem one instead of an electric

when my turbo motor goes in, i'll be getting a high volume mechanical pump because 2 times already something with my wiring cause the pump to shut off and over heat, the first time it was professionally wired (which last a good while), the second time i tried my hand at it (lasted about a month haha) and now I have it wired up to a different source altogether.
I dont know if it just blew out the relays or what but im surprised i didnt blow a headgasket on my 150k mile stock motor as i pegged the gauge both times it happened, puked out all my coolant, and my radiator hoses sucked shut

I just don't want to take the chance of it happening with my new motor, its great to cool the car down while it's off and my fan switch doesn't work nearly as fast as the pump but I drive from Fl to NY and back regularly and 18hours of straight driving each way is alot of stress on an electric motor (actually surprised my fuel pump hasnt given out haha)

I KNOW i've seen a wiring diagram somewhere that included wiring a light to come on if the pump did NOT come on... which seems like an excellent idea to me ;)
Then if you REALLY had a problem, you might be able to hotwire the pump straight to the battery (but only in an emergency)

Yes i've seen it too, but my eyes always notice the gauges anyways... the first time it happened the pump kept kicking on and off and i was a mile away from home so i drove it through and as i was pulling in it pegged and puked.

the second time I had just started up one of the largest bridges in jacksonville and noticed the temp going up, it is far too dangerous to pull over on that bridge so i had to ride it out.

Yes the warning light helps but it my case it would have made no difference.

I thought my pump was bad but i did as you said and hotwired it to the battery and of course it started working. So it HAD to be wiring right? yea well idk but it couldnt have been the ground because i had it grounded in the same place as my fan switch and that worked so.. the relays I had it wired to (which also had my heated O2s wired to) must have gone out.. I wired it up somewhere else and it seems to be working but thats what I said last time. So in turn that must also mean my heated O2s are no longer working haha.

It's funny because the pump goes out only when I'm picking up my g/f from the airport... I drove to school for a solid month (not to mention the trip down from NY) and never had a problem... then i drive to the airport and it happens once, rewire it... drive another month, drive to the airport to get her and bam it goes again haha

They make a relay kit that you can add that will tell you if it isn't working. I daily drive my 383 Impala and haven't had any temp issues.

I've DD'd mine for the past 8-9 months with no problem but then it just turned off... so i mean symptoms lead to wiring but in the long run for me, it's more worth it to get a high volume mechanical on the new motor, im sure 1 extra psi can make up 6 times what a ewp can give me

great info guys. thanks a lot. not to sure if an electric pump is worth putting on my car since its my DD and as long as those things usually last.. i'd rather spend my money elsewhere than resupplying electrical water pumps

Stock WP here, dont really feel like its a good mod for a car I want to drive alot. Fine for racecars, but I need/would like my WP to last. The 5-8rwhp or whatever it is can be had elsewhere.

The stock pump will last much longer for obvious reasons. Granted its not that much to have the electric ones rebuilt, and they are pretty relyable overall. Maybe on my next build (strip/garage queen).

double roller timing chains... if you want one you cant use the stock pump

yeah but when your running a double roller timing chain you have a race application anyway.

i picked up around 10-15 hp when i swapped. i dropped a tenth in the 1/4 and that was the same amount i got out of 1.6 rrs.

i have had it for 4 years amd drove the car alot with zero issues

One came in my car and I have had no problems the nice part though is the last owner left the cam alone so I can go back to stock if I wanted
