And we will start with this lovely image above. As you all may have seen at the Shootout this year, my car was not running up to par. It was bouncing off the rev limiter, and more importantly, I couldn't build boost for the life of me. Well, I wonder why? LOL... I forsaw this coming, and did a lot of smoke blowing about ripping the Z apart. Well, this weekend, I finally started. I have a lot of work ahead of me.
THE PLAN
Here is my plan of attack: After much thought and consideration of my budget, I am going to keep stock bore and run low, low compression and forged internals obviously. I was tossing around the idea of doing a 355, a 396, but with the overwhelming amount of things I need to purchase, I believe this will be best. Besides the fact that my daily driver, my '04 GTO, needs maintaining and isn't the cheapest. I speced out some parts for the block, and the block I have is in absolute perfect shape. Please give me your opinions and thoughts on my build. I am doing this all on my own and really would like some guidance on products and parts out there for the build.
My Build:
Turbo: Turbonetics TC76 journal bearing (Replacing my Garrett GT40 .61 A/R); replacing TiAl BOV and wastegate with large ones (undecided); manual boost controller
Engine: I have an addition LT1 block with stock bore; will run forged internals with roughly 9.1 compression; inverted dome pistons (have to spec some out), forged crank (haven't decided yet, but not Eagle), etc.
Heads: Stock 643 casting heads to be ported
Cam: Lingenfelter 74220; 215/220 .534/.544 114 LSA
Intake: Undecided
Fuel System: Undecided on injector size (I want to replace and go bigger than the 42 SVOs I have); upgrade fuel system from my single intake 255 Walbro; picked up a Aeromotive FPR from Ryan Stout
Engine Management: probably stock PCM tuned; but may convert over to a FAST or some other engine management
Transmission: TH400 with a 4000 to 4500 stall (probably Neil Chance)
I would like to run somewhere between 10-15 pounds of boost, and reach somewhere in the low 500HP range. Not looking for anything crazy, but my real goal is to reach high 10s, which I think is pretty reasonable.
DAY ONE
6117
First things first: I removed the front clip, intercooler, headlight assembly, and hood. My Z is in beautiful shape, and I don't need shit getting knocked into.
6118 6119
I have a bit of help from Jon (InDuhFace). I prefer working alone mostly, less regulating (if you know what I mean). The first day was mostly working on cosmetics, but I did pull some of the intake piping from the TB down to around the front.

Thanks Brenda! I appreciate the kind words!

DAY TWO
Well on Sunday night my guy Brett, my best friend Dave, and my semi-bro Jon popped up to help out on the teardown. The saying of the night was "too many chiefs in the kitchen."
6120
Not sure if you can really see it, but a majority of my undercarriage was soaked with oil. The DS safety loop had a coating of oil and my wrapped piping was soaked as well.
6121 6122 61236124
Dave and Jon worked on dropping the radiator out, while Brett pulled the alternator and water pump. The bearings in the water pump were fucked. Oh, and my coil, that deserves a post of its own. I will post up a picture of my coil tonight. I don't even know how my car could run. The terminal was sooooo corroded, there was no way there was any spark. Intake is full of oil, just full of oil.
So, I got the radiator, coil, water pump, PCM, alternator, and a majority of the intake piping pulled from the car that night.

Picked up a couple of nice buys for the Z in the last month. Got a set of Prostars with only one run on them from my buddy Dave, and a Aeromotive fuel pressure regulator from Ryan Stout on the boards. Waiting on getting a water pump and an aftermarket Streetfire coil from Ryan too. Thanks so much dude! The stock water pump will work fine for now, but I may upgrade to an electric one.

Glad to see you starting your build!
Pistons are all the same for any GM small block 350. I've posted a snap from JE/SRP's website, with your choice of pistons bordered in red. They're inverted dome. I have a set of these in my motor...well, the 138103's anyway.
6127
In addition, I know you can source pistons from Diamond or Mahle as well. Diamond makes several pistons off-the-shelf, but they can also make anything custom for your application.
The SRP's are doing just fine for me, and I'm sitting considerably above your power goals.

My buddy Dave said SOME Gen I pistons are interchangable with GEN II blocks. But I don't know why it would make a difference if the stroke, rod length, and bore are the same... :hmm: Thanks for the documentation QC97Z. I have a buddy who works for Diamond, so I could talk to him, but I will probably go with JE, SRP, or KB.

Those will work fine. Gen 1 rotating assembly is the same as the LT1 as long as the crank is for a 1 piece rear main. Lookin good so far!

Generally, IC piping is different for EVERY build. It's up to you how you want things routed and placed. Even an inch up, down, left, or right with your intercooler will cause piping to change position and/or angle.
Check out Vibrant Performance's website www.vibrantperformance.com (http://www.vibrantperformance.com)
They sell elbows, reducers, etc. out of multiple-ply silicon/rubber built for boost, as well as piping in several configurations (straights, 90's, 120's, etc). You use this piping to cut and fit custom for your build, and have it TIG welded.
As far as intercoolers, how big and/or thick you go depends on your setup needs. There used to be quite a few decent intercoolers available on Ebay all the time, IIRC.

I believe you can do a forged 355 rotating assembly from Eagle and get the SRP pistons in the kit. At least i know i could for the 383 im building. Buy the best you can afford and dont let other people make up your mind.

I'm not letting people make up my mind on the build, I just want some input on parts out there that maybe I haven't used before... things like that. I will go forged crank, I know everyone is telling me to use the stock crank, but I think a lighter forged crank. I'm not going Eagle... anyone have any recommendations on a 3.48 forged crank that's fairly reasonable but not Eagle?
Thanks Popo for the encouragement. I frooze my ass off in the garage last night because I ran out of propane! Weep.
On the pictures for my intercooler piping, I can dig some up from last year when I first did my install.

to be honest i think your wasting money. if you are going to buy forged parts it does not make any sense to not bore it .030 and do it right the first time.
http://www.coasthigh.com/Chevy-383-Dish-Top-12-8cc-Dominator-Kit-p/12345-dm-c383.htm
the cam is small. personally i would get one with mid 220's @ 0.050
how much is the upgrade on the spring and the porting going to cost vs getting a set of tfs heads?
the th400 is a good trans. just put red alto clutches and kohlen steels and make sure you put the 34 element sprag in it. if you want to save some money
you can get a manual valve body kit from trans go.
for the converter. pick some one that will work with you on making changes to get the best performance out of your combo. some company's charge you a restall fee. one thing to watch is your rpm drop between gear changes. our old converter was only dropping 200 rpm each gear change. when we had it cut apart we found 6 bent fins. you want to see around 700 to 750 rpm drop on each gear change.
the stock ecm is capable of getting you in the 9's. we used a stock ecm with a low ohm driver to push 86lb injectors. car went 9.90's.
aftermarket ecm is a lot easy to work with but its going to cost.
good luck with the build. dont forget to have fun.:D

DAY THREE
Last night I went out and did a bit of alone work, which I prefer. I pulled my injectors, ASR module, and my fuel rails. I tried pulling my fuel lines from the back of the rails (and I have the metal pullers, not the plastic ones), and I couldn't get them. I'm going to try again tomorrow. I probably lost motivation from the propane running out and being butt-ass cold in my garage.
But on a side note, I wanted to post up pictures of my coil that I pulled back on day two. Oh my God. How was my car running? Look at these pictures...

Workwoman-ship, nice! LOL, yeah... to be honest, having my GTO everyday isn't the best thing for my motivation factor. I always figure, "ehhhh... fuck it. Hey, thanks. I should get cracking on the car again later this week. I have court tomorrow for a ticket, and next week I am going out of town for work. This last weekend I went up to Sno*Drift, so that took up my time. Looks like I am going to have a couple more LT1s at the house within the next couple of weeks. DAY FOUR
Well, I got back in two from a business trip from last week, and got out into the garage yesterday. I was able to disconnect the fuel lines, and removed the fuel rail, the EGR module off the back of the intake, the ASR, and the cruise control module. I got all the bolts taken off the intake manifold, and tried with all my might to pull the intake off. No such luck. I stuck a couple of screwdriver on to the sides of the front of the intake and gently hammered them in to try to free it, and no suck luck. My buddy Dave is going to pop over tonight and take a look to see if he can free it. All of the bolts are out for sure.
On a side note, I picked up a cam from my DD GTO. We will be installing that in a couple of weeks, so my DD will sound pretty healthy behind that SLP Loudmouth I have on it. I don't have exact numbers, which sucks for buying springs and pushrods. The cam came out of the one-off Spectrewerks GTZ Camaro ('99 Hugger Orange speciality car). Somewhere between a 525 to 530 lift, not sure on the duration, with a 112 LSA. We will use a degree wheel on it to get more numbers, but I really don't want my DD down for more than a weekend.

Hell no, this ain't no LSx build! You guys know what it is! LMAO... no, I figured for the price, and since I drive my GTO A LOT, and I mean A LOT, it would be fun to throw a cam in so I can have some fun over the summer while the car is down. But yeah, we will see how tonight goes with this intake. From there, it will be time to drop the motor pretty much. Gonna pull the harness tomorrow if all goes well tonight.

Yeah, I do have a sister, but she isn't into cars. LOL Thanks for all the motivation guys, I really need it. The last few days have been really rough for me, I am on this new medication that I started last Monday, and it is really making me depressed. Bad side effects. It's unbelievable how strong the effects are.
DAY FIVE
6451 6452
Excuse the blurry image!
Well, I was able to get the intake off last night. Got a hell of a lot of work done. Pulled the valve covers, and I have 643 castings, which are decent ones (I do have an additional set of 643s in my garage for a port job). Pulled the ABS, so I am thinking I will have to buy the delete kit, which I know isn't cheap. Also got rid of the AIR. Everything is coming together. So tonight or tomorrow I will be pulling the drive shaft, the sway bar, the wiring harness, and I should be pretty much good to go on dropping the motor out.

I understand on the whole medication thing. My doc doubled my Prozac dose :disagree: Still not helping, and possibly making my depression worse. FML.
I'm finding very little motivation to do much of anything. But if I force myself to do something, I get into it and feel happier...like when I force myself out into the garage to work on my Z. Even if you have an hour or two, force yourself out to work on the car. It will make you feel better.
Things to consider for retaining your sanity (this is my list):
1) Spring is almost here
2) LTX Builds
3) LTX Shootout in September
4) Whiskey
5) Hot Chicks (or dudes, in your case)

Which one of the Wichita boys are you...? Steve? LOL... I just hope to have my car done for the Shootout. Well, this weekend, we added another LTx to the garage. Pictures to come! My roomie Porter (Callme34) picked up his '93 Z on Saturday. Needs paint for sure, but it is a complete car with a seized motor. We are both pretty excited to see what's up with this one. His goal is to get it down to the Shootout this year as well. Besides needing paint, the car is all there and the engine bay is pretty damn clean.

04/13/2011 - UPDATE
Late last month, I picked up a PA Racing tubular K-member for the Z. On Friday, I am going to put money down on the '93 black T/A GT roller that I found in my area for $900.00. The car is wicked clean, and I have everything laying around to make it a running car. I figure with the amount of money I will need to get the Z right, it will be a while. But that doesn't mean I am stopping with the Z.
Well... good old boy "acquired" a BRAND NEW set of LS coils on the brackets for me for my birthday on Monday. That adds a whole new twist to the build, I wanted to definitely do a coil conversion to the Z, but the cost was too much. Well, I guess I have half of what I need for that now. I will post up some pictures of the coil packs and the K in a couple of days.

Hey, do you have the coil harness already wired that look like those from EFI? Pictured here.
If not, I've got a set prewired off my EFI kit for sale. I didn't need them as I had a custom harness built. Running LS2 coils but that shouldn't matter if I'm not mistaken.
ZGOBYBY
04-14-2011, 11:29 AM
No, I don't believe I have them prewired. He basically just pulled them off of a LS1. So you are telling me your coil harnesses are wired to tie into an existing LT1 harness? I may be interested...
QC97Z
04-14-2011, 12:27 PM
Pulling them off an LS1 is no different, if you are planning to go EFI Connection. The stock LS coils on brackets with wiring to the main connector is all you need.

No, not wired to an existing LT1 harness, I'm running a stand alone ecu w/ a stand alone ICM from FAST and the harness for the ICM is pre wired for the coils plugging directly into each coil. Didn't know at the time of my custom order and could've done it differently but what's done is done and don't have a use for the EFI coil harness.

Well, I decided to just go forward with my Z and ditch the T/A. With almost 100 days until the Shootout, I really need to get the motor out of this thing, although money is more of an issue than time. But I may be able to pull it off. Who knows. On Saturday, the 21th, I went outside and the day was just a disaster. My room mate left a set of heads sitting on a flimsy chair, and my boyfriend hit the chair with the jack handle. So the heads proceeded to fall, with one smashed my left index toe (splitting the nail in half) and the other one smashing my leg. So needless to say, I was done that day.
Finished up the last couple of things yesterday, like disconnecting the turbo, removing the torque arm, and driveshaft. My exhaust came undone at the Y suprisingly well. So the motor is finally out and ready to be torn down. Dave, in the green shirt, is a forth gen F-Body genius. With his dad passing away just a week and a half ago, I am very thankful that he helps me out. Brett, although not a GM person by no means (he's a rice master), is a great help too. I was the one doing the down and dirty work yesterday. I still can't wash the oil out of my hair. Hahahahaha...

This is Jen posting through Brett's screen name. I picked up a couple good front suspension components yesterday for the Z, so I guess I will have to bring this thread back to life! Back to work on the Z tomorrow, if all goes as planned. I got a few other goodies since I last posted, so I will have to introduce those as well.

Thanks Larry. Buying those A-arms and coilovers actually boosted me as well. Right when Brett and I woke up this morning, we walked out to the garage and moved some shit around. We are on our way now to go pick up Brett's engine stand, and his cherry picker. The goal for the day is to get the block off the K-member and get it up on the stand, and to half-way assemble the tubular front suspension components. Later I will post up some of the goodies I've purchased over the past year...
Thanks to everyone at the Shootout by the way! I had a great time hanging out with some new people...CamaroZGuy, David from Knoxville with the quick bolt-on Formula (I was impressed with that 12.92 run bro), and anyone else I may have met!

I am pretty sure I am keeping it rear mount, because I have seen them work. I also have a great EBC set-up with launch control built in, and combined with a great stall, lag will not be an issue.

Well, I figured I would post up the pictures of the goodies I have accumulated since I was last posting. It's not that I have lost interest in completing the build, I am just facing some "unforseen" financial difficulties (I shared this with some people during the Shootout). Really, going to the Shootout, and getting some great deals on some parts really makes me believe I can get it done, hopefully for the LTx Shootout 2013! Now, on to the parts:
11049
I picked up these BMR tubular lower A-Arms from the Wonder Twins (Noice on the site), with Ebelbrock coilovers for a steal at the Shootout. I have some more researching to do on the coilovers, but all in all, this was a great buy. Thanks Wonder Twins!
11050
This is the EBC I picked up for my car, at a total STEAL. It's an Innovate Mototsports MSBC-1; I got three of these back in February from a local GM engineer, who had them installed in some Ecotec drag cars. I got three set-ups for $200.00, and they are $500.00 each, on their own. This controller has launch controller, scrabble boost, boost-per-gear, among several other settings. I know this will be a big help at the track!
1105111052
Here is the crem de la crem of my buys so far, a set of brand new, Diamond SBC turbo -33cc .040 over pistons, brand new. I got these back in January directly from Diamond at a local swap-meet for $300.00 BRAND NEW, with rings and wrist pins. They are some total beauties, no?
11053
I picked up this A1000 from a local F-Body owner at the same swap-meet for $170.00... what a great deal as well. There were also some Oliver billet 6.0 rods there which I really wanted, but my pockets were not having it! Damn!

DAY THREE
Last night I went out and did a bit of alone work, which I prefer.

I know this post is from long ago, but if you unplug a coil wire and leave it within 1-2 inches of the stud, it will still arc across that gap and fire the engine, just to give you an idea of the potential of the spark. I pulled a coil wire once on a engine on the dyno and left it pretty close to the coil as we were checking something on the starter. It fired right up with at least a 1" gap between the wire and coil. I would still go OCD on the corrosion though.
Also I like that Innovate controller.

UPDATE: Brett (SUBARUPOWERTIME) located a TH400 for around $100 off of Craigslist, so we are going to go check it out this weekend. I will post up how that pans out, as well as take some pictures for the Z's interior.

Updates... I have a few.
A couple of weeks ago, Brett and I ran out to the town of my high school alma mater, Milan, to pick up a TH400 from an old-time racer out there. The following Monday, Brett took the trans to school, ripped it apart, and hot-tanked it. Right now, it's sitting in my parts room with no internals. Hopefully soon, we will be able to buy the internals. I guess that Cheetah makes good stuff, so that's who we are going with, unless anyone else has some suggestions. I will also be running a trans-brake.
Secondly, the whole interior is out of the car. I sold my seats to some nice fellow from Kalamazoo (on the other side of Michigan) for a good price. The carpet is rolled up, and sitting in the car. Finally, I got the engine on a stand finally... although I won't be using this block. I have a fresh block sitting over at my condo, ready to go. The Z is finally back down on all four wheels though! That is an accomplishment in itself!

Oh yes, most definitely.
The GTO took a partial shit this morning. I was driving to work, and suddenly the car started to idle rough, lost power, and fell on its face. It's not throwing any codes. Hopefully it's a shitted injector or something minor. We shall see... Brett and I limped it to his shop.
I hope everything turns out ok on your GTO, and good progress on the Z

Well, I figured I would update a bit. I have been making some progress on buying some things for the Z. This weekend I went to a local swap meet an bought a FAST duel widen and setup for $175.00, but that's for the GTO. That was stupid cheap. I also picked up some Pro-Comp gauges for $100.00, again, another stupid cheap deal. The Cynatech EGT setup was only $80.00, which retails for $320.00. From just these purchases alone, I saved almost $900.00 from retail. The FAST setup is $480.00, and the gauges are $90-140.00 each.
Brett also picked me up a RCI fuel cell, and a Hurst Quarter Stick 2. I also got some terminals for 5 bucks. Making progress... Figured I would let everyone know this isn't dead!

I found some sick deals this weekend. Brett found it from some older gentleman that used to do sandrail racing, so he was getting rid of all of his stuff. I only buy stuff when I can get a great deal on it, I can justify it otherwise with me floating my mom while she is trying I find a job (I am paying for all of her bills and letting her live at my condo while I pay the mortgage, while I rent my own place... Money is soooo tight). Every deal I can find that I can justify paying for, I feel lucky and thankful. My mom comes first though before anything.
Thanks Wonder Twins! Can't wait to see you guys again this year...

Jen, don't know how I missed this thread. Looks awesome girl!
If you still need a replacement for that coil, I will gladly donate the one Brett has been trying to sell for me to your car. It still runs like a champ, and I would be happy to make a small contribution towards getting your LTX on the road.
What all do you have left before it is ready to turn key?

I am running FAST XFi, so I will be doing coil per cylinder conversion. Thanks for the offer though. I doubt I will have it done... I have to get a turbo, crank, rods, get the trans done, put a cage in, get a set, get the stand alone, wheels and tires, rear end, driveshaft, machining... As you can see, I have a ways to go. But I've got a few things.
