Thanks everybody. I just selected them yesterday. I won't actually fly one for a couple months. I think it's got a big enough CAI, lol. If anyone ever wants to race (my camaro or my jet) in NC, lemme know.

I would have posted in the military section, but I wanted to share my new instrument of Malice with the whole site!

haha. Don't worry about that one bit.

I was like a scared red-headed orphan the first time I taxi'd a jet on a carrier deck.

Hope you're not married. They don't call it the "Widowmaker" for nothing. ;)

On a side note, I H-A-T-E air refueling those things. Slow, and take gas slow.

Meh, my wife doesn't mind. Widowmaker, carolina lawn dart, and whatever else they call them, mostly refers to the av-8a. That think was SCARY. The B has alot of improvements.

SLOW? What are you flying? Do you mean they are slow to join up on you for refueling? I can see a Hornet tanker complain about how slow a harrier is, but not a KC-135 or KC-10. Who am I to talk though, I've haven't done air refueling yet.

Fastbird is a KC-10 Boom Operator. I used to be as well. And its true, after we'd get done tanking the Harriers, if we were dragging them anywhere, we'd speed up to our cruise speed, and usually would get a radio call from the Harriers that would sound something like "Uhh.. You guys mind slowing up a bit? Our throttles are at the firewall and you guys are pulling away from us".

Congrats on the Harrier. I am guessing you wanted it at least somewhat to post it up. It may not be the F/A-18 but its still a capable air frame that still blows shit up

Where are you doing your pilot training at? Mine is going to be at Columbus AFB. I am assuming you are Navy or Marines?

Kick ass man!!! It was my dream to become a fighter pilot when I was a kid!!!
Do you get to choose wich type of plane you wanted to fly or do they just give you one????

I'm guessing the Marines are like the Air Force in the sense you have to go through some kind of pilot training (maybe initial pilot traininig for Marines) and then depending on how you did in the class meaning your rank in the class among your peers, you get to choose what air frame you want vs what is available. No one actually "gets" a plane. They get an airframe. Later after trainning is finished you may be assigned a certain jet, but like quoted in Top Gun "You don't own that plane, the taxpayers do".

Holy crap thats too funny! I guess all the drag on the harrier, combined with the high bypass fan make it a pig at altitude. I'm a Marine. I just finished advanced strike training in Meridian MS. Its about an hour south of columbus. You will shave the Meridian one East, Birmingham, and pine hill MOA with us when you start flying at CBM.

They give us an aircraft based on our grades and whats available at the time. Our preference counts for a little bit, but not THAT much. Hornets were my first choice, but who cares, I'm a harrier pilot now.

if i wanted to go sign up for the air force, what disqualifies you? i know sight, but what other kinds of strict requirements are there?

Well bricez28 they will do a back ground check along with a drug test so if you can pass those test you can pretty much do anything you want with high scores on your entry test.

It definatly ain't gonna happen in a F-14. They were all retired about a year ago. There are some other countries that still have them and fly them (Iran for instance).

As a civilian, there's probably no chance you have what-so-ever of ever getting a ride in a fighter. I know only a small handfull of people in the military that aren't pilots that got rides in fighters.

*Edit* I just now remembered, there is a place in Russia that if you pay like $3,000 they will take you for a ride in a Mig-29. It may not be a US fighter, but it would be a ride in a fighter.

What do you want to do? There's tons of people with bad vision that are in the Air Force.

Now, if you want to be a pilot, then there's a crapload of stuff that will disqualify you.

First, you need a Bachelors degree in college, with a 3.8 or higher GPA. Then, you also need to have a perfect credit record, criminal record, and near perfect driving record. Top that off with being in peak physical health, low cholesteral, no longterm health problems, perfect vision, exceptional hand eye coordination. You have to score well on the AFOQT (Air Force Officer Qualification Test), and have good scores for different hand eye coordination tests, as well as a basic pilot test. Having your private pilots license is not a requirement, but will help (if you are older than 28.5 it is a requirement though). You have to be young enough to start pilot training before your 30th birthday. You will also need a letter of reccomendation from a Lt Colonel or higher. And on top of that you have to be an excellent citizen, showing a good background with lots of community work, and other things making you stand out in a good way.

Let me put it to you simply. Everyone wants to be a pilot. There is no shortage of pilots right now, especially in the military. The last Active Duty Air Force board had 687 applicants. Of that 687, only 18 were selected. Almost all of those 687 applicants had everything listed above. They simply won't even look at you when they have that many qualified applicants applying every time if you don't have all your ducks in a row.

I know this, because I am one of the very lucky ones who were chosen. And I didn't even make it my first time I applied.

I say all of this not to discourage you, but you need to know the odds from the beggining if this is what you want.
