I got my first DSLR today! I'm excited! I bought a Nikon D3000. So far, so good. I've been messing around with it tonight. I just went it to the store to look... And ended up walking out with it.

I also bought a 8gb memory card.

I shot all day yesterday with a nikon. I am definitely never switching over from my Canon. Just felt small and fragile in my hands. Learn to compose shoots and always leave it in manual! Hope you have fun with it! When I bought my first dslr awhile back I was leaning toward a d40x

You are going to love it. I am on my first DSLR, and it is a D3000 as well. It may not be a top of the line DSLR, but it does well for hobby photographers like myself.

I picked up a 8gb card as well as a Nikon bag when I bought mine. I just need to save up a little bit for a decent tripod...I don't trust this Wal-Mart one I have.

I have a D40x and love it. Spend some money on a good lens. As another guy posted, learn how to shoot in manual. Most DSLR's come with a "kit" lens which gets your foot in the door, but a dedicated fixed lens $500+ will shoot much better. I take track shots here and there and cover local bodybuilding shows and use my Tamron 60mm F2 lens for just about all of it. It lets in soooooooooo much more light that the camera can do its job much better. Here's a few shots:

I took this at the finish line at the local 1/8th mile track. The blue car is a 6.90 car that runs to about 100mph, the red one is a 6.50 car that runs to about 105. This is the 2nd round of eliminations. If you look through the spokes of the red cars wheels you can see the yellow box that has the timing euipment in it. This was a hard shot to get due to the timing involved. The blue car won btw:

I dont plan on making a career out of it... More for just a hobby. Any good recomendations on an affordable "starter" lens?

Camera phones FTW though! lol

From my 6mp 11 year old rebel. Mind the reduced facebook post. Nikkors lens is a little bit better build quality than canons 1.8 but they are amazing lens'

Mine is starting to error now to. But its also the original rebel and 11 years old. Going to replace it with a 60D once it goes on the loyalty program. Look into that program you can get a 7D for 1100 out the door

I was up in the air between the 60d and the 7d , I decided on the 60d because of the screen. My laptop has a Sd card reader built in. The 7d uses the bigger card. They have the same sensor. While the 7d has a full view finder, the 60d is only 96%. I just ordered a lens from canon and he gave me a 1087$ Body only on a 7D. Then you send them a digital camera back. I just bought some broken point n shoot for 10 bucks shipped off ebay to send back.

Congrats on the new toy!

I personally like Canon myself, but looking at Nikon's, I can honestly say even though I prefer Canon over Nikon, Nikon makes a good camera IMO. As far as the lens goes, I would use whatever it came with until you get some more shooting experience under your belt. If it didn't come with anything I would reccomend an 18-55 ish size. I will say that as far as the lense goes, Canon is leaps and bounds above the competition. That is not to say that there aren't other good ones out there, but just that Canon's lens's are amazing. If you ever go to a professional tennis match, or formula one race, you will see that all the professionals all use Canon lens's.

Anyways, my best advice is play around with it a bunch. Vary your shots from inside and out in different lighting and apeture settings. The manual that came with it should be an excellent source to get started. There are a TON of amazing shots that can be had with a DSLR (that can't be had with a point and shoot, and DEFINATLY NOT a Driod, sorry Popo).
