I need a new starter, need something that can handle a 12.5ish compression.
Any recommendations?

I used the Jegs 555-10001. It's the CVR ProTorque starter, but labeled under the Jegs model name. Great cranking power and it's adjustable to clear headers and stuff.

I just went to the local parts store and asked for a starter for a 96 Corvette. It's a gear reduction type starter, smaller than the F body one, and has a lifetime warranty. It was just over $100.00 and turns over my 12.5:1 engine just fine.

Josh how long have you had it on your car?
What difference between the vette and fbody starters? I thought the torque should be about the same on the two motors.
Joe, does the Jegs starter have lifetime warrenty?

Not sure on the warranty...but here's the starter in question.

I might have to consider that one.
I do have a new starter from advance so I can always exchange it back but this time get the vette's version if I find it to be able to work.
Its good to have friends that work there lol

Bump, anyone else can testify for vette starters to handle more the f-bodies?

Specifically, you want the starter from a 1996 GRAND SPORT Corvette, which has the production LT4...

Not that I am doubting you but the next starter I get I want it to be good. I basically need assurance.
I do not know much about starts but what would make the LT4 better then the LT1 (starter wise)
They are both built to about the same compression if I am not mistaken?
It would be easier for me to get a "stock" starter rather then ordering one that is why I prefer to do it this way.

PM returned! The LT4 and LT1 vette starter for 96 share the same part number from Advance Auto:

The one that came off my car (stock) was a completely different design:

I was planning on getting a Jegs/ Summit one but I figured I'd try this one simply because if it didn't work I could easily take it back. Now if I have an issue it's just a short drive to the parts store to exchange it. FWIW I've never had an issue returning/ exchanging anything from Jegs or Summit it just takes more time and costs $ to ship it.
