View Full Version : Impala head gasket = still bolton car?

Long story short, my car blew a head gasket. Im in the middle of the teardown and am thinking i want to go with the GM Impala SS gaskets to bump the compression up slightly. So far, my car is only boltons, and i dont have the extra cash to swap in a cam at the moment (just have enough to do the head gasket job). So my question is: if i swap the SS gaskets in, and stick to boltons, would the general public still consider my car to be bolton only? There would be absolutely NOTHING done to the heads... just the Impala head gaskets, some new valve seals, and LT4 springs cause my stockers are probably worn out.
Opinions?

I would still consider that a "Bolt On" car.

while i applaud your honestly in asking, personally i would have just done it and kept it to myself. whats now happened is you opened the door for the nay sayers and you always will be questioned about it. whether you choose to do it or not

It's a fucking gasket, if anyone gives you shit tell them to blow you.

Its still a bolt on car IMO.

Hrmm, that's a touchy subject. I honestly don't think there would be a quantifiable difference in power since you didn't change anything else. The compression bump you did was mild. I imagine if it was some other "class type" motor where you swapped gaskets and took it from 9-1 up to 10.8-1 then people would have a problem.

i'd call it a bolt-on car still, even if it technically does mean you took the heads off and the part touches oil

I would even think twice about it. Still a bolt on car.

I'm pretty sure you used bolts in the process of putting them on.

still a bolt on car, however to save ur self the trouble of drama an hate just dont mention it.
Out of curiousity, what kind of compression differences are we talking about?

I'd also like to know what kind of performance gains you would expect?

heard the same thing about slight bump, but no results to verify gains

there r really very lil performance gains maybe as much as 5%. if ya r lookin for bigger performance gains in a head gasket swap then look into the shim gasket. it bumps the comp just under 11.5:1

shim gasket is the 1094 felpros that are sbc's that need modded right? or are there thinner gaskets then that?

how hard is it to modify them?? is it that much of a difference over stock or the impala gaskets to use these gaskets? im ganna be doing a full overhaul and wouldnt mind squeezing a lil extra power outta it over a gasket if i can..

its not hard at all to mod them. maybe 5 min each.

What's involved in modding them I guess all I would have to do is lay the lt1 gasket over the sbc gasket n trim what's needed? Is it worth it power wise?

I am late to this however I see no problem with the Impala head gasket replacement. You are
not replacing the pistons or rods with aftermarket and you are not porting the heads or even changing the valve size...... So the car will remain a bolt on car!!!!!!!

What are the gains with the shim?? Im gonna use them soon.

its ether 4% or 6% increase per point in compression i believe it is 4%. with that being said its 1 point and you prolly have 280ish so get to calculating.

the impala gasket might be as much as a 5% gain. the shim gasket is more. and will bring your comp up to almost 11.5
