Well after 5 years of owning the heap we decided to start tearing into it today. The hood, decklid, and doors are off. The fenders are loose. It is on the lift now. It is going to need floors, full quarters, rear inner fenders, and rockers. Otherwise the car is solid. The interior was gutted when i got it. I got into the trunk and found a set of window cranks, armrests, the door panels, and the steering wheel. Right now I dont have the cash to start resto, but I am using this as an oppurtunity to teach me son how to take cars apart, use tools, start to think about how things go together, etc.. Here are some pics and an album I will update along the way.

Actually it will be his. He is 12 now, so we have time. Originally it was 1 color (robin's egg blue)
Awesome project!
Do a LT/LS swap. :D
Will probally be a v8 swap, but I have a 1956 vintage 265 with a glide. Probbaly gonna stay carbed, but try to use some old school "go fast" parts
very cool man.you just gonna restore it or what do you have planned ?
Plan is to resto-mod it. Plan for 4 bucket seats and full length console (had no rear seats originally), custom touches, etc. Exterior will be de badged and cleaned up. Disc brake front, maybe new rear (w/posi)
WIll keep this updated. Thanks for the compliments guys/gals!

Update!! I will be working on this project more this winter. I am throwing around the idea of putting my 56 Chevy body on either a 94-96 Caprice 9C1 frame or cutting up and F-body. Apparently you can, with a lot of work, make the 56 body fit a 3rd gen f-body floorpan/subframe. I am currently looking for decent donor cars, either a 3rd gen f-body, or 9C1 Caprice. I have a motor I can use and a lot of little things. Here are a few links to see what I am talking about for the chassis swaps:
Caprice Swap:
http://www.bangshift.com/blog/Found-Lost-Photos-of-Rusty-s-Chassis-Swap.html
3rd gen swap
http://members.cox.net/56iroc/
(http://members.cox.net/56iroc)The Caprice swap requires channeling the 56 floors, the 3rd gen uses the floor pan. Either way my 56 needs all new floors, this is why I like both methods. I have very limited automotive structural experience, but a lot fo industrial equipmnet manufacturing experience. I can weld pretty good and this is a good excuse to get some new tools.. LOL I cant think either is too hard, just time consuming. FWIW a "decent" aftermaket tri-5 chassis starts a 9 grand less rolling gear.. geez

I would try to stick with a full frame unless your planning on putting a cage in it. If your looking for updated suspension then maybe a 2nd gen F bod subframe welded to your original chassis.

well after a 2 year break mainly due to continuing to mod the camaro and such, we got back on the 56 yesterday.
We the body is now free of the frame. The frame looks pretty good. The hood, trunk lid, firewall, cowl, doors, roof, and fenders are in great shape. The cabin, not so much.. I will need full floor with braces, inner and outer rockers, quarters, inner rear fenders, trunk apron, and trunk outter corners. THe rot is a lot worse than i thought. We got the glass out and arend there looks fine. Roof is just surface rust. there is a good amound of bad body work. I need to media blast the body and see what is next. going to be a longer more indepth project than i thought. Today I started on welding up a home made body cart. Here is a few pics and a link to the photobucket - http://s4.photobucket.com/albums/y136/TheKeenans/1956%20Chevy%20Project/

my son HATES my Ultra-Z!! Prob because ut took up a lot of time we should have been working on the 56. I only have about 4-5 grand budgeted so far the 56. Looks like 2500 for all the sheetmetal i need to replace. The upgraded suspension / brakes is gonna be a big chunk, so it is more than likley going to be a resto-mod/hot rod on the cheap.. LOL

got body on homemade body cart. May need to add 2 more casters to the rear, it is a little heavier back there than i thought.. anyway I can now move it around pretty easy and now I can get the Camaro out for the time being!!

Yeah, it sux. The issues with work are just the icing on the cake. The 56 has got way less useable parts the further we dig in. My son is cool with it. He said today he would rather save some money for now and look for maybe a truck later. He thinks he would like to a mini truck lowrider with maybe a ltx swap since we have another lt1 sitting around. Or We may just work together on the camaro. We have a few ideas for making it faster and better looking. Dunno right now, going to be an interesting next month and a half.

well, in the never ending saga of my life.. work actually was very good to me about my needed time off. I had 3 ppl want to buy the 56 and all flaked out on me.. I am in search of a suitable replacement for just the cab portion of the car and may be on to something. THe project looks like it may get back on track after the new year.. if it does the timeline for completion will be longer becasue of some of the ideas we have but it is cool beacuse now both my boys may be able to work on it. Overall I will prob dump way to much time into the car but that is the point.. spend time with the family working towards a goal... and another money pit! LOL

Who are you using for sheet metal and parts. I have worked on a quite a few 55-57 cars in the past year. Even helped with an original 55 V8 motor for a Convertible. Can you take some really good pictures of the floorboard, the rockers under the doors, the underside of the car near the rockers, and the trunk area. Also take pictures around the headlights and from the inside of the front fenders near the headlights, that is where rust is always at.
I've done quite a bit of restoration on these cars and get any question answered if you are going to keep the car mostly stock. One guy I know has a double funny car cage on top of a Art Morrison chassis in an original sheet metal 55 Convertible, plans were to do 200 mph in the 1/4 mile with a 800+CI BBC, got married and she won't let him finish it now.
If you are going to use the original frame, the best bet is to sandblast it, but you can wire wheel it and paint it as well.
14527
Sandblasting a 55 frame this summer.
14525
This is right under the drivers feet, someone hacked up the trans tunnel to do a manual conversion and we replaced it along with many other panels.
14523
Lower quarters were no good on both sides, actually had been crashed on the drivers side.
14524
Trunk pan completely replaced. Complete floorpans for these cars are expensive, but if you have many pieces to replace it is worth it.
14522
Here is a 55 that my friend is working on, he does awesome work. If you look at the floor you can see he butt welds everything instead of overlapping and using clecos like I do.

Noice- I am currently getting prices from a few places for sheetmetal. I am going to replace the full drivers and pass 1/4's and both rockers. I am also going to replace the rear tail pan and the 1/4 to trunk area panels (the part withthe taillights.) My hood, deck lid, doors and fenders are great. My floors and rear inners are bad. The frame is OK, but the suspension parts are shot. All the chrome is pretty bad but I have some ideas for it. The 56 was a parts car and is missing alot.
Both - So the unibody conversion takes care of a ton of stuff i would need to replace. The floors and rear inners as well as trunk floor will all be from the 87. THe firewall and front inner fender area will be a mix of both cars. The suspension and brakes on the 87 are a huge upgrade over stock and i would have done that anyway on the stock frame. The motor and trans from the 87 is more what I would have installed anyway. The amount of fabrication will be pretty high, but I plan to re use and re purpose many parts off both cars. The Idea is to spend the least $$ possible just to get a roller. I know time is money, but it is my time and my hobby so I dont consider it too much. In the end it will no way be a pure tr-five nor a pure restoration. It will hopfully be a decent driver with a cool story behind it.

OK you all are gonna think I am nuts but I have yet again moth balled the 56 for now. The 87 trans am I bought is actually savable and too nice to cut in half. My son has some ideas for it. First off is he wants to paint it SOM with a black and orange int. It is a 305 car with a 700r4. It is also a t top car. Plans for motor are being discussed. Prob not a Lt or ls swap anytime soon. Maybe a crate 350 carbed and catted to pass emissions. Possibly a vortech baby blower too.. body wise there is only one dent and a small rust hole in the rear inner fender into the spare tire area. It needs a lot of TLC interior wise. Overall this is gonna be pretty easy project. Will post pics soon. Prb start a new thread. The 56 is in storage and we are kicking around buying a good mark 57 vert body and putting the 56 front clip on..be different:D

Project is back on. Dad and I got a full floor pan, rockers, and got the engine rebuilt. The body is cut behind the b pillar and we will be building a woody wagon out of it. I'm no Chip Foose, but you get the idea with my sketch. Dad is a cabinet and furniture maker. We are going to use oak and mahogany for the wagon body. The 3rd gen is on hold. I'm inventoring the parts and selling off the stuff we won't use. Also get a better handle on what we have and still need. The 93 will be re tagged and on the road by May. I did an oil change and found no metal from the broken rockers. It has a header collector leak. I need to just weld it up. The damn audi took far too much time and money. My son has paid me back 2/3rds of what he owes me so far. Overall we have just shy of 5k into it. Not too bad for a nicely modded 83k mile car.

Kind of, we are taking a lot of liberty with this cause by the 50s the tin woody took over for the woody. The old woodys of the 30s and 40s had a lot of wood framing with steel supports. I have to make the steel support still, but we have to get the rough shapes done first. Alot of that wood will be thinned down.

We would have been further ahead on the 56 if we didn't find a 52 Plymouth Concord for a steal. It is an all original 48K mile car that someone took apart in 1970 and never finished. The motor was fully rebuilt and the front suspension was all done by the the PO. He also acquired enough parts for another whole car over the years he sat on the project. It is a Flathead 6 with a 3 spd OD trans. It runs like new and drives great. Was a quick restoration, about 5 months. It is a very rare bodystyle and i kinda like it.

Got the bumper mocked up. Had to do some adjustments on the tail light housing. I fabricated some parts you can't see underneath. They seal up the quarter panels.

I was concerned before that the bodylines from the metal to the wood would not flow... but now that I see it... i get it.
Im still very confused about the wood parts though. How do u make them to hold up to weather and insects... roy from age... etc (i understand this vehicle wont probably ever see any of these conditions... but theoretically)...

Thanks!
It is marine grade plywood and the cherry has a very tight grain. They will be sealed with marine grade varnish. The wood structure will be sealed before we finish the interior. Original woodies did suffer from rot. That is why they are hard to find in original condition.

Ok... so with ur choice of treatment... the finish and the fact the car will never see bad weather, it should last forever.

Not sure. We plan on weighing when it is done. The wood we are using is pretty light. There is a lot less steel because we used wood for the structure. Old woodies used steel structures to hold the wood panels.

More progress on the woody. Passenger side tail light mocked up and wood going on the passenger side. Need to finish rear valence pan and the quarter panel extension. A lot easier now that we learned from the drivers side. Mom got the tailgate finished.

Had to pull the woody out yesterday to put the Audi on the lift. Got a couple shots before it was driven back in. Gonna be different for sure. @popo8 (http://ltxtech.com/forums/member.php?u=1330) i will get some inner structure pics this weekend. I am finishing up the tail light fabrication on Saturday. The pass side exterior wood is almost completed too. Picked up some lexan last week for the windows. We are starting the push for completion. from here on out it should go pretty quick.
