rebuilt

I have the engine out of the t/a and at the machine shop. The timing chain that was on the engine had around 40,000 miles on it. Should I buy a new one? Also If I buy a new one since my car has an electric wp is a sb double roller timing set compatable?

If you're going through the trouble to rebuild the engine i would go ahead and replace the timing chain but it probably isnt necessary. My dads van went 310000+ miles before it started jumping time.

you can use a double roller with an electric water pump.

I'm replacing mine @ 151k with a cam swap.

Keep it unless it looks like it has ALOT of slack. Its not unheard of if they slack up early. But yours should be fine for awhile.
Reused mine at 65k with the new cam, did not have slack. I intend to change it at 100k though, OR if I make any huge mods this winter for some major power.

It didn't seem as though it had a lot of slack. I'll see how funds go with the machine shop then I'll make up my mind.

It's a good idea to replace the chain if you are going that deep.
40K miles is plenty to stretch one out.
My stocker came out around 52K and it was pretty bad.
That was when I did my original H/C in 2006.
I put a whole new timing set on the new motor, it goes in in the next few weeks. (~60K miles on car)

its not a bad idea since your all ready that far in the motor. ive seen plenty stretch around 40-60k. but also on the other end the one in my car is pushing 170k.

A higher lift and greater duration cam, along with stronger valve springs will place additional load and wear on the timing chain set. Something to think about.
With the double-roller (a good option) you may have to clearance the timing chain cover some and check the crank hub spacing for the damper. Also, you may have to eliminate the CPS reluctor ring to get the hub spacing correct.

It had a double roller in it. Do need to find an lt-1 specific tim ing set or will a sbc one work. I know there are similarities between them.
