i have a 6 speed 1996 firebird formula with an slp loudmouth 1 cat back and an intake, i want to buy pacesetter ceramic coated long tube headers race style and get rid of the cats. what are the horsepower and torque gains that i could expect? are headers worth the price for the performance gains?

Longtubes are definately worth it!!!!!!!

10-15rwhp can be expected with basically with any header you choose, I went with Pacesetter and the fit was decent but there are better options. It's certainly all about your budget. However I do caution that your LM1 will be extremely loud w/ headers.

Get pasesetter LT's.. Theyre well worth it.
As mentioned above, expext 10-15hp

Your car will be significantly louder due to you not running a cat and choosing that particular cat-back. The pacesetters are decent in the ceramic coated version but the Hookers are more durable imo. I have both on my cars and the pacesetters are shitty looking after a few years. When you put headers on your car will sound very loud due to it being rich. It will really bark on a cold start, and probably have some rasp to it. A good tune will quiet it down a little bit and pick up some additional power. If you plan on keeping the car for a long time, I would save some bucks and get a good stainless header such as Kooks. You get what you pay for.
