ok so here is my problem, i have a 1993 Z28 on friday night I put in a full tank of Mid Grade Gas. On sunday I was driving around town when all of a sudden the car started acting funny, Under WOT the car ran normal and had plenty of power and no problems at all. The car is spitting and sputtering under normal acceleration and when cruising thru 1-4 but pretty close to normal in 5-6 and pulls from 40mph to 80 in 6th gear starting at 1,000 rpms with no problem. I let the car sit all day yesterday (wednesday) and drove it to work this morning. The car wouldn't idle normal at all, spitting and sputtering all the way to work, (only 3 miles) I went back out to the car after I got to work I went back out to crank the car to see if it had changed at all and it didn't but it started to throw a code, so i jumped out the 2 pins to read the codes and the ones i got that concern me are a
16-Distributor ignition system (low resolution pulse)
36-Distrubutor Ignition System (Faulty High Resolution Pulse or extra low resolution pulse detected)
42-Ignition Control (IC) Circuit (shotred or grounded circuit)

the car still runs but i am afraid to drive it to far i don't want the opti going out on me while i'm riding down the highway at 80mph (happened Before)
so could anyone please shine some light on what these codes mean and what i should look for?
is this a sign that my opti is about to go out or am i looking at something like a wiring harness or a connector or maybe a coil wire or something?

BTW just had new plugs and wires put in the car about a year and a half ago and have only put about 20k on the car since then.
again if someone could please point me in the right direction it would be great

Thanks in advance!!!

Sounds like a opti to me. And I dont usually say that off the bat. And you dont need to be in 6th gear at 40mph thats alot of load on the motor

i was afraid that you might say that, so who makes the best opti besides msd? do i need to replace the whole thing or just the cap a rotor or just the opti it self without the cap a rotor and use the one i already have, where is the best place to get one at a good price?

The first thing to check is the opti electrical harness for tightness, wire degradation and corrosion on any terminals. Cap and rotor problems don't cause those trouble codes, so replacing only those will not help.

thanks for all your input. Who has the best price on an opti and i was looking on ebay and was wondering which ones where the good ones and which ones where the ones to stay away from. Or if any of the ones on ebay where any good at all. I would prefer to not spend $500 + on one but i will if i absolutely have too. Also has anyone tried one from a junk yard? It sounds like a bad idea to me but was wondering if anyone has tried and had any luck with one and what i should look for if i buy one from a junk yard

Have you checked this harness yet like shbox suggested?

I know you have a 93 the pick is just an example!

I wouldnt bother getting one from a Junkyard, Good ones pop up used on here time to time. The Seller, Thepartsladi always had the best deal on the opti but for some reason they shut down that name and started under a different one that I cant recall at the moment. Dont get a knock off / Autozone pos. Stay away from All ignition any place that doesnt use a Genuine Delphi opti. Only going to have to place it again.

Yea i checked that already that actually left me and my wife stranded on the side of the highway so i just hardwired the whole thing together, the connector to the opti is still there i just hardwired that harness to the car harness and the car ran better actually until recently, no corrosion no breaks in the wire while doing a continuity test, I was hoping that was the problem because i was hoping the opti wasn't bad it only has about 55k miles on it but i'm down here in NC and we have gotten alot of rain at once down here in the past 6-8 months so i'm sure that has something to do with it going bad

When you replace it,try to vent it like 95-97 models and seal it up tight so that no water can get in.I did this to mine and I have a year so far on my Oreilly's Opti.

so i have determined after replacing some connectors and all the easy cheap stuff i can think of that the opti is gonna be replaced so i was looking on ebay and was wanting some advice on buying one of ebay or if this one http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chevy-Camaro-Z28-Optispark-Ignition-Distributor-1993-94-/390088701069?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5ad319348d is any good if it isnt which ones on the current listing are the good ones on there?
