View Full Version : Supercharged; Do it need a TB?

I was thinking about getting a bigger throttle body after I rebuild my supercharger. I was wondering since it is a forced induction motor, it is pushing more air threw the TB so if I go bigger would it be easier for the air to pass threw? Also, if I would get one, which size? I have seen 52, 58, 80, 90 mm TBs.

Biggest you can go on an LT1 is twin 58's or a monoblade... The 80+ are not for LTx's.
Anything bigger than a 52mm setup is going to require intake manifold work.
As far as "do i need it"?
I say sure, everyone could use one. Is it going to gain you power, probably not much. Only thing for sure is that you will see lower boost numbers after the install because boost is purely a measure of restriction. If you loose some restriction, you loose some boost number on the gauge. This does not mean that you lost power though, just means that your moving more air through the motor.

anything that reduces restriction between the blower outlet and the back of the intake valve will gain you horsepower.. a 58mm throttle body is a good investment on a blower car. as stated the bores in the front of the intake manifold will need to be port matched to the supplied gasket with the new throttle body for it to help.

Careful with a Monoblade on a blower car. I've seen a couple of instances where the forced air was actually trapping the TB open. Odd sounding I know but it was happening.
Yes it will definately help. The stocker is not only restrictive, but very turbulent and kills airflow, even more so when your pushing the air through it. Also you will see HIGHER boost numbers, due to the fact you measure boost from the intake and not before the TB. More air through the TB = more boost.

Ok, thanks guys. I heard that you can port the intake manifold with a dremal. Is that an OK way of doing it or should I get it done by someone else?
porting with a dremel is for high schoolers. it would take you a week to do it, go buy a good electic grinder or something, a scribe and some machinists dye

 If that aint the truth!!! If you have a compressor, go buy a cheap 1/4" air grinder from Autozone or something. A basic porting kit would help to.

Bigger TB couldn't hurt, IF you go with a monoblade you may have to get an AUX spring to help keep the TB shut. It has been known for boost to keep it open.

I have a 54mm from AS&M and didn't have to modify the intake at all. The 54's are as large as you can go without having to make any modifications to the intake. Do you NEED a 58mm for a FI application? No. I'm running 15 lbs. of boost and my 54mm isnt a restriction at all.

^yea but the stock tb is and that was the op's point was. Anything over the stock tb is going to help lol.

im sure he could find a dirt cheap airfoil to smooth out the air flow if he didnt want to fork out 300 bucks.
i havent gotten a bigger tb yet because i just dont think the gain is worth that much. ill probably get the 58mm some day. i want to get meth/water injection first.
