View Full Version : Bad torque converter?!?

Wuts up guys and gals?!? Just recently my tranny has been acting funny. When the tranny shifts from first to second I would get a thump right where the shifter was indicating that I may have a bad mount. The only thing is the tranny mount is an Energy Suspension mount so I'm sure that's not it. Torque arm mount seems to be ok. Then just last week the tranny felt as if though it wasn't fully going into gear. It felt as if though I was holding the brake while i was pushing the throttle. Just this morning I was making a turn and for a split second the car went out of gear!! It quickly went back into gear and drove normal. What are the symptoms of a bad converter or am I looking at bad clutches?? Quick run down of the symptoms.........

1. Occasional thump or bang on the undercarrige during shifting.
2. Trans will not move car unless throttle is engaged. (feels as if pushing on brake and throttle at the same time.)
3. Trans popped out of gear as if shifting into neutral. (only happened once)

It's not doing this all the time just on occasion. For the most part it drives just fine.

Thanks for any help guys!!

A bad TC will usually stall the car out completely when coming to a stop.

How does your fluid look? (Color/Smell/Level)

Burnt? Dark and not Red?

Sounds more internal related, might be time for a rebuild (How many miles?).

It was pretty dark. Didn't think it was that long since I changed it. The tranny has 45k on a rebuild.

Update!! Lost 3 gear yesterday!! Trans is done and since I have no $$$ for a quality rebuild I'm going to have to go with a local shop that will sell me their rebuild for $350. They offer a 6 month warranty and since the toyo is down (rod bearing) then I don't have much of a choice.:frustrated:

That sucks man. Mine is developing a bad vibration and my second gear is about to go.

Ouch, good luck with the rebuild.

Sucks to have it go that way, but we will all be there soon :D

Sounds to me like you ran it low on fluid. Here's a quote from you
I was making a turn and for a split second the car went out of gear!! You went around a turn, and starved the pickup of fluid, which caused it to not have any pressure to engage the gear Ie: it slipped into a false neutral. You cooked it. You have to run a tranny REALLY REALLY low to starve it of fluid.

Heat is the number one killer of trannies.
