so i am in need of your help, as most of you know, well, anyone who's on my facebook, i recently bought some 17" ZR1s, now, i need to know what tire sizes would be ideal for me and my type of driving.
everyone i know of runs 275s on the front and 315s on the rear. however there are some of my friends that are telling me otherwise. apparently 275s are overkill for the front and i should be looking more at 265s or something along that size. i need to get some tire prices together so i have an idea of what to save. i realise there are similar threads to this one, but i don't race the car a whole lot except for the occasional red light fun. i should add that i plan on installing an eibach prokit and kyb adjustables on all four corners in the next few months.
any help would be appreciated guys, thanks
Chris

Hey Girl!
Your freinds dont know anything. I would return the 17x9.5 and go 17x11 all the way around and dump your exhuast at the axle and then with your eibach drop you have reached roadracer status.
You can run 245 up front I believe. I have 2 good tires (275) Id send up to you 100 plus shipping, but I think up to canada shipping would suck!
You biggest factory here is that big ass 315 in the rear. You can get a cheap sumi type tire but even with red light fun you will never hook up. Are you DD the maro? If so Id try to go something non drag radial with like a 200-350 tread wear rating so you are not eating tires up like crazy , If you are not dd the car id just get a Drag radial and roll it out of the hole.

275's are pretty much overkill, thats what I ran but it wasnt really necessary. I'd prolly get a 265 just to save on tire cost a little. Definitely get 315's out back.
Sumi's definitely do not hook up, my car would spin ALL OVER THE PLACE when I had them, they suck for traction but last forever it seemed like.

maybe a little bit more info is needed... I think you would benefit from 255s up front with the 315 out back. again dd'ing is going to affect your tires. I would run 315 555r's in the rear. 12k miles easily on them especially if you dont track the car very much. and maybe the nitto 555s in the front. thats the setup i run currently and i have no problems. doesnt spin too bad on the street either. but again... its up to you! sigs on this page look great by the way! brenda that paint looks flawless! chris... badass! huff--- devious man!

275's were standard all the way around on the SS and WS6 packages so Im not sure I would call them overkill. 315's in the rear is a wide ass tire but will look NICE as long as it doesnt stick real far outside of the wheel well. what are the widths of the rims? 17/9.5 and 17/11's?
Colossus

Summi's are fine. If you don't really race then done really worry about it. They perform well enough in water and dry as a street tire. If you want a competition tire get a competition tire. I haven't met a non drag radial I couldn't shred. Street tires are going to get eaten on a WOT pull if your car is running right at all. As far as running a 265/40/17 don't do it. First of all it WILL look skinny on a 9 inch wheel. I know mine do on my Z06 wheels. I thought, "hey, stock vette size, it'll be okay." Unless you get the Supercars or a GSD-3 they look skinny. Second, you have limited choices with the 265. Do you know why? Because as far as I know it only came on 2001-2004 Z06's. This leads to another problem. The tire manufacturers know what car uses these. As such prices are higher. 275/40/17 is NOT overkill. Let me point out that it is a FACTORY size on the SS models. Are the ZR1's 11 inches in the back? If so run the 315/35/17's all day. Brand is really up to you. My gripe with the Summi's, only gripe, really, is that they look a little thin on an 11. But if you want to spend money with the best look and performance go GSD-3 and let it be. My friend runs these front and rear on his 2002 WS.6 and they look and perform great. But the price kills you. Seriously.

Get 275s all around. 315s are too big out back unless its a Nitto DR. The factory put 275s all around and they will look better than a 265 or smaller up front. Youll always regret it if you go smaller IMO.

rims are 17x9s front, 17x11s rear, yea it would be my dd for summer,
colossus, great info, thanks, my tire duy said the 265s would be hard to find. since the minimum tire width on an 11" rim is 275 i was told it would look stupid. but you guys have seen them, so you would know.
chris i may take you up on that offer, i wouldnt mind finding out how much shipping would be. i'm at the point where i really dont wanna drop another grand on rubber, but it looks like i might have to. i just dont wanna cheap out on some crap tires that will disappoint me in the end.
thanks for the compliments proace4!

Can you get 315's to match that tire? There is no reason not to run some steam rollers out back. Just do it and you'll never regret it. I have a 285/35/18 (from previous owner) on my 18x10.5 Z06's and they are TOO SKINNY! The same with my 265/40/17's on the front. I feel like a damn ricer with stretched tires.

agreed, I have 285/35/18 on my c6z's and they stretched too much. I ended up putting 305's on it and the width looked perfect. 17x9 id go with 275 and 17x11 305 or 315's you could always get 295's for rear but you d be hard pressed to find some in a 17incher cheap.

i definitely would run 315 like everyone else said.. I run the 315/35/17 Nitto's on my 17x11's on the rear and they look great! as far as up front i would definitely go with nothing smaller than a 275 because it will look way too skinny!

I have 17x9.5" in the front and 17x11" wheels in the back. I DD'd them the majority of the tire life (Sumitomo HTR-Z 275/40/17, 315/35/17) and I wouldn't consider it overkill. The 315's are but I wouldn't run any smaller than 285-295 in the rear on a 11" wheel. If It's only a DD and you don't care about the look of wide 315 rear tires or traction/handling that much, I'd have gone with 17x9's all the way around with 255-275 tires.
The reason most people go with 275/315's is for speedo calabration. But that being said, they are a great combo. Hence why SLP/GM chose the 275's (I believe 315's or 305's came on corvettes?)
Make sure to calculate your tire radius so you can determine if you need to recalculate your speedo.

as long as you keep the same diameter as a stick wheel/tire you shouldnt have to recalibrate. Im not sure what the numbers are but im sure someone can tell ya.

I have the typical ZO6 set up with the 17 x 9 up front and the 18 x 10.5 in the back....
I love my 275 front, 315 rear set up....
however remember that the wider your tire the more the car wants to follow ruts and ribs in the road because of the larger foot print....
BTW, what kinda money are you looking to spend, I got my 315-35-18s from a company for 400 shipped for the pair.... and they are Pirellis, they wont hook worth a shit, but they will last forever!

27.5 i believe is what i was told today. SO many numbers running through my brain right now.
i'm not too worried about the speed calibration thing, i have a hypertech programmer and it'll do that.
it's just every shop i've talked to has issues getting the 315s, few places even told me to check my sizes because they've never brought in that size or couldnt find it.
as for the money question, i'm looking at $1100, what i'd LIKE to spend is not that much, but the world does not work in a poor girl's favour, now, does it.
as soon as i pay off the card, i'm getting these, and that won't happen for another month or so. i just need to know what i'm looking at right now so i can save and prioritize. no more shopping trips for a while!!
oh yea, so far i have been quoted 1300 for goodyear eagles, 1300-1100 for nitto 555s, 1300 for bfgs, but those were drag radials...so no.
tirerack was 600, but they would rape me with shipping and taxes and duties, it would come to 1200.
so there is where i sit.

Well, If I can help out let me know. I know that when I ordered my Pirellis, the shipping was included. and If thats the deal, I can get them and ship for what it costs, Im not looking to make any money.
Also, at the garage we are a recomended installer for tire rack, and we get even better prices than the general public can get, so maybe if you find somehting on there, let me know and I can see if I can get it a few bucks cheaper to compensate for the shipping to Canada.
In all honesty, those pages I posted should be the way to go, I saw some GREAT deals on there on NEW tires......

I doubt I'll ever buy a tire from anyone other than discounttiredirect.com or tirerack.com. Those prices are retarded.
FWIW, I did a quick query against discounttiredirect.
Nitto NT555 (non drag radial)
2x 275/40/17
2x 315/35/17
$708 shipped. It'll cost you $50 for a shop to mount/balance 'em and I'd recommend spending another $50-80 for an alignment as well.

I heard that on money, my car is actually sitting broke down right now, with the rearend out. I need a 9 inch now with the mods that I have....the launch is so violent off the line now that the factory 10 bolt just cannot handle it. The last time at the track I twisted the driveline twice before it snapped into. I replaced the driveline drove it about 40 miles and when I went to drive it a couple of days later their was a noise in the rear....and its gotten so bad you can not drive it. Are your headers long tubes or mid-length.....I had a HPP but I actually have a tune......if you can find some to just tune your car in your area it would make it like night and day.

another vote for discount tire direct or tirerack, i cant believe it took so long for someone to recommend it - if you are close to the border something i would look into is having them shipped to one of their installers in the US and just driving across the border and having them installed there
and there is no doubt here, 275 up front and 315 out back - no question at all
the only question is if you want the rears to be 555's or 555r's(drag radials). people still tend to get upwards of 12k out of a set of the nitto drags - for my set up it would be pointless to get anything else, you might be able to get by without.... but that is up to you
Chris

I dont know how it is up there, though have you checked out local bon yards or tire shops, a 275/45/17 is a common tire and I am sure alot of places would have some lieing around you can buy used and save a few bucks. being the car person you are you know if a tire is good or not. On one of my old caprice beaters I picked up a used set of tires for 150 bucks that had pretty much new tread on em. Plus that size being common on mustangs should make it easier to find. Then you have a few extra bucks to get a really good rear tire and your not in the hole on shipping

then what do i do with stockers? and how to i explain to border dude when i go across with brand spankin new rims and tires and stockers in the back of a camaro that i didn't buy anything? Im guessing you have to pay a fee or something if you buy, then cross the border? Is there a way to say you were visiting someone and the rims and tires were a gift? I'm not familiar with the whole border thing.
