I have a question for you AF folk. What is the oldest age the AF will accept? I am 26 and looking into talking to my local recruiters office. Thanks!
devonsZ28
08-13-2010, 04:33 PM
i dont know the exact age limit but you should be ok, i was in basic with a guy that was like 32ish (cant remember for sure b/c that was awhile ago)
CALL911
08-13-2010, 06:12 PM
26, you are getting close, but should be fine if you are enlisted. If you are looking for an officer job, depending on what you are looking for will have options while being older. For example, you can be more than 32 years old if you are looking to become a officer for a lawyer, or doctor position. But if you are looking for the glory job like me and want to be a pilot, then the reg states you must be IN pilot training prior to your 30th birthday, meaning you would have already needed to go through your commissioning source.
Your recruiter will know the requirements of today.
Fastbird
08-13-2010, 06:23 PM
That pilot age is waiverable with good reason though, I know one who was waivered in at 32.
On another note....

I am looking at going into meteorology with them. I was an asst. meteorologist for a weather modification program for 6 years, and weather has always been my "nerd" thing. Never went to college for it because out of state tuition to GOOD meteorology schools was out of my price range. I just figured it would be worth a shot at least. Something I have always wanted to do, just never had the chance. I plan on talking with the recruiter, I just wanted to make sure I wouldn't be wasting my time.

Maybe back in the day, but not any more. They are not currently accepting waivers. I for one applied (fairly recently) because after being rejected the first time around with the Active Duty board, I tried to get a waiver. They're response was simple; "We currently have over 900+ applicants for twenty some pilot spots. Why would we make acceptions for even more?". Luckily, I cought my break when I applied next with a Reserve board who met just a little more often, and their window was "just" big enough to get me in at the nick of time. BTW, the Reserves aren't currently accepting age waivers either.
This was all fairly recent (within 18 months). Now, I heard they are making it even harder, with even fewer pilot spots available per board :(

I'm going to start with the fact that I've been no saint and some of my troubles were deserved, but I'm getting jerked around big time with my career prospects, pay, rank, and mere dignity as a person. Leadership that has a god complex and knows nothing wrong automatically condemning someone who's on the radar when the facts haven't even presented themselves yet. Blind judgment of guilty without any legal actions having been processed, and treatment as such. Constant unrelenting pressure and micromanagement on a person who's had a terrible year, been in a really tough spot recently, and has just been through something VERY traumatizing. Leadership that thinks they are above the regulations (boy that was fun siccing my ADC Attorney on said person). Ect. ect. ect. I'm looking at a discharge here shortly by all estimations, if a Chapter 4 that I intend to file is approved. Enough is enough for me.

I think its important to note in this thread, that military life can also be an amazing thing. For me, it has been a dream come true. It is a lot of hard work, and I can say that just like in life, there are bad days that come and go as well. But depending on what you want to do job wise for the military, it can be a blessing.
I know Fastbirds situation, and sadly even good people can get hosed now and then. I just wanted to make note for anyone reading all this and possibly considering joining the military, that if you are the patriotic type, and you get a job you want that you would enjoy, it can give you a feeling like never before. Being the one in harms way to defend this great nation and its people is a feeling words can't describe for me. Its more than just a job, it gives me satisfaction just serving. Doing all of it while being able to do a job that ever since a young boy I dreamed of is just a HUGE added bonus.
Get in the wrong job you don't want, or get in a group you don't belong in, and military life can be a prison sentence as well. Do your homework, ask questions to many, and take time to think about it, because this is more than just a job. It's a way of life.

To piggyback on what Call911 is saying, I am NOT bad mouthing the military. I wouldn't be where I am, have done the things I've done, have seen the places I've seen, and have met the people I've met if it wouldn't have been for the military. Sadly, my choice to move to where I am has resulted in the destruction of my career. I'm bitter, but I won't dissuade anyone from joining.

I was on flying orders from 97 through 2010 when my career ended (SOOOOO close to my toilet bowl, you flyers will understand what I'm saying). We probably knew a few of the same people, given a few loads going through training at Altus with me went to Dover (I did KC-135 training before being going KC-10, total waste of time). Hey.....does the name Daniel Ramirez ring a bell? He was an FE on the C5 @ Dover, was stationed at Scott AFB with me from about 2009ish on.

Jan 2001 through March 2007. Worked Current Ops as both a local mission schedule and mission planner from 2003 until I left in 07 so I wasn't flying as much as I'd have liked to have been.

I was just checking this out. Pretty cool. I'd seen a few guys at TravisAFB. If anyone worked flight line on 130's or C5 in the early 90s, you'd have seen me around. Were were always flying out somewhere. I was stationed at Ft Ord w/ 7th ID and seemed like we were going somewhere or just alerting, go up, load up and fly back to Ord. What a waste of 8 hrs flying in circles. We only took it serious when live ammo was issued "before" we loaded.
