So....I'm gonna rant here so please just listen and gimme your opinion.
I have a receipt that says I paid for my bottom end on 1/15/10, I dropped my engine off about a week before then. It says I also ordered H beam rods. Well it is now 3/27/10 and still no engine, and its only been tanked last I talked to him. I held my pistons, and he brought out a rod from a Scat box next to my pistons to use as an example for a question I asked about small base circle cams...it was a I beam rod (not positive it was mine and I didn't ask). Well here's where I'm getting irritated: I ordered/wanted H beam and pretty sure I'm getting I beam, Its been almost 4 months and I have about $2000 in a motor thats just been hot tanked, last time I called him I asked when it was gonna be done and got a reasonable explanation but he also said "the squeaky wheel gets the grease" which to me means I'll be waiting longer. So....I'm gonna pick up whatever parts he ordered for me (unless he got I beam rods then he can keep those) and the motor and take it elsewhere and I'll assemble. Keep in mind I wanted him to assemble it due to it being freezing cold out and me working tons of overtime. Now its warm and I'm off OT and was under the assumption it was going to be a month maybe a little more. I'm paying an extra $700 for THIS?!?!?!??!?!

I might just let him keep the crank too and get a Lunati Sledgehammer, what he talked me out of and I wanted to begin with...

That sux, unfortunately I don't know of anyone who has gotten their engine back "on time" from any machine shop! I'd just call them about once a week and ask where they are with it or even show up and check on it. I'm always afraid to be too pushy cause with my luck they'd rush and just throw it together. Defiantly make sure your gettin the parts you requested and paid for, what kinda crank did they tell you to get?

I'd take my business elsewhere. If you're paying, and want it done, then you shouldn't be getting sluffed off for other customers.

Scat 4340 forged crank. Is this an OK crank? Are Scat's forged I beams as nice as their H beams? I hear H beams need more block clearancing. If I get it back I can assemble it just fine, but wanna know what to return to the shop and what to keep.

Scat is ok stuff. THe I-Beams give up a little strength for weight savings. H-Beams typically need clearance, how much depends on the rod.

I have yet to pick up an engine on time from any shop .... EVER, they could use some time guesstimation training.

my machine shop always has stuff ready when they say its going to be ready on a rare occasion it will be done before the date said. however they never have to order anything i bring them everything they need all at once to get the job done.

Any GOOD shop knows how long it would take to do the things you want done given the time of year and work already waiting to be done. I used to work in a machine shop and from about late Jan till May they got real busy. People getting there tax returns back finally have extra cash to spend on that project or new/refreshed race motor.

Yeah, I'm thinking of just getting ALL my stuff I dropped off and returning the crank/rods/pistons/oil pan/pump/pickup and getting my $2200 back that I've paid so far and taking the block elsewhere and assembling it myself. This is ridiculous, I know it should take a little time, but almost 4 months!?!?!? I'm STILL pissed about this and I'm usually cooled off by now.

Kinda feeling JE pistons, Oliver rods, and a Sledgehammer crank I originally wanted....not the Scat 4340 crank, H beam rods, SRP pistons he talked me into.

This is what I would do.

If you really want to assemble yourself and want to save the cash, go for it. Saving cash is always good too (except when its a compromise for part qualty....).
