View Full Version : N2O Timing Retard Question

I'm wondering when to retard the timing, when the n2o engages or at a specific rpm. I'm running a mild bolt on motor on a stock tune for the time being (until winter when it goes under the knife) and I know I don't theoretically need to retard the timing for safety reasons but want to do it anyway to see if I can't gain a little top end as well as be safer, etc. for example, I'm running an msd6 digital and a nitrous outlet dual window switch with the lt1 plate system at a 100 shot. Should I set the timing retard to activate on the first window stage when the nitrous starts at say 3000-3500 rpms or on the second switch at a higher rpm like 4500 rpms, etc.
thanks.

You will want the timing to pull once the silinoids are armed. Thats the way mine is setup and works great.
Basically I have an arming switch running through my Digital6, once the arming switch is activated it pulls timing. When the arming switch is in the off position I go back to timing in the tune...NA timing.
Check the MSD website, they have a few diagrams that helped me out when I was wiring everything up.

Here is a diagram I made for another LT1 guy...the wire marked for the Crane ignition retard will connect to the retard wire on your MSD box also.

Stroked96bowtie was correct that you will want the timing pulled as soon as the solenoids are active.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.

LOL We have FATF against the pretend Vette.
Does either one of your cars move under its own power?
BTW Most do not start to pull timing until over a 100 shot on our cars ;)

I'm setup to activate the timing retard when the solenoids are activated rather then when the system is armed. I'd have to go look it up again but there is a rule of thumb for how many degrees to pull per so many HP that you're spraying. If you're running multiple stages you would need the retard to increase with each stage....to stay safe and get the most out of the first stage.

Rule of thumb is 2 degree's with every 50hp;)
Well after four hours and six 'test' drives I came down to going back to basics.
So my whole setup used to combine a Wide Band Commarder firing the Digital six and FJO on a ramp.
Well this all only worked ONCE for two pulls on the dyno. Then it started driving me crazy. I have been fighting it all season.
The FJO desided to ramp up cut off and ramp up again six times on one run. Nothing like pouring a the juice to it and picking up a whopping 3 tenths!
So I yanked the FJO. Then I could not get it to work at all.
SO Tonight after chasing every single wire I find the WBC is not providing the ground any more that fires the entire system:hang:
There seems to be one huge problem in the Nitrous industry. No one runs there freaking system the same! Half of them want to be fired with a ground and half with power. This makes the entire system a PITA. The ONLY reason i was using the WBC to fire the system is the damn FJO did not have a steady out put of EITHER to turn on the retard.
My head hurts!
ANY way it looks liek I will be going back to some thing that works EVERY Damn time! A BUTTON!

let me know what all features you are wanting....and let me look it over.....it sounds like the NOS launcher and corresponding add ons is right up your alley.
Progressive, wideband, data logging, and a dedicated output for the retard ;)
