Turns out, my supercharger needs to be rebuilt. There is a bad bearing and you can hear it from the inside of the car and using a stethascope, you can hear it big time. So I guess I need to rebuild it. I am not positive but I am more than likely sure it is a Paxton because the MSD box says so but the stick on the SC is scratched out. I need to know how much it will cost to rebuild, parts and labor, should I do it myself or get it done and if get it done, by who, will I need to tune it after the rebuild, and is it worth rebuilding it or changing it to a turbo?

This is what I had in mind:

Thank you so much. I guess I wont be going fast for awhile....

You can try and have it rebuilt, but if it is Paxton I am not sure if they are still around.

As far as turbo kits go, those ebay links arent turbo kits. They are a bunch of parts thrown in a box and they expect you to cut and weld and fabricate your own stuff. Plus the turbos are junk.

If you want to step up to a turbo kit, email myself or contact VRE as they do kits too. I have a couple posts in thios forum on some buildups I am doing.

Paxton and Vortech are now the same company. One of them bought the other, can't remember who bought who. Anyway, contact them. They will let you know if it can be rebuilt. I'd recommend stepping up to a T-Trim, I'm just saying...:secret:

First pull the head unit and determine the make of the damn thing. I'm pretty sure the Vortech's have the word vortech casted directly onto them.

Then either go to the paxton website, or the vortech website and CALL the tech line. They will want info from you before giving you an RMA number so that they know what to do when they recieve the blower.

FWIW, paxton did make a Lt1 kit a long time ago.... But long enough ago that it's not likely that your kit is a paxton kit. That MSD box could have been picked up on Ebay at any time.

I bought the car from a guy who works at a towing company. He used to race stock dragsters (or something like that) and would build them so he knows a fast car. The car what abandoned and he bought it form the company for $500. The only thing he did to it is put a Magnaflow muffler and a radiator. It already came supercharged. Before we bought it, be got a carfax on the car. The car had 5 LEGAL pervious owners. So I have know idea what has been done to the car besides the visable upgrades. I will take of the supercharger and take some pics of it.

Thanks.

Also, why are the rebuild kits so expensive? Could I go to my local bearing store and just get some bearing for under $100?

I dont think you want to be throwing "any" bearing in a supercharger.

The rebuild kit comes with exactly what you need for that application, thats more than likely why it is more expensive than your typical bearing.

Like previously mentioned, get the head unit off the car, find the tag, then give Paxton/Vortech a call and see what they say. If they can't help you I know a place that might be able to they sell rebuild kits for older Paxton SN series blowers. PM me if you want their information. I don't want to put the info on here since they are not a site sponsor.

Thank you guys! I finally took of the supercharger and found out that it is a Vortech V-1. I found a guy who can rebuild it real cheap and I know some of his work and he is good so I let him do it. Also, I am thinking about changing the 8 rib pulley to a smaller pulley. Is it worth it?

Thanks,
Kris

That depends on your supporting parts... Alot of power can be made by simply swapping pulleys. Just gotta make sure the rest of your combination is up to par.

Wha, wha, whaaaaaa. I just found out that the SC needs to be repaired. Big time. A bearing went out and the fan started scraping against the the metal shell (totally for got the names of the parts) and turns out that my cheap repair is going to be a $1,300 repair. I got a quick estimit of this price from the Vortech company store (only 15 mile from me. YES!) and the repair guy said that he could get me a brand new one, not refurbished SC that will be the same price. The thing is though, I don't really have that money now so I asked if I could still use it for know but the guy said yes, but if it gets bad enough, the blades could end up in my motor. So should I keep using it until the noise gets really bad?

Wow, this is just getting stupid. I looked at it a bit closer and everything is just fine. A bit of sand got into the propellers and made some scratches. The bearings are fine for the BLOWER, but for the tensioner, the bearing is bad. That's were the noise was coming from. Wow....

Hmm, I don't know... If you can afford it I'd go ahead and get a new head unit. At least let Vortech take a look at your current unit. I would hate for you to mess up your engine becasue you re-installed a questionable part. Being that you live so close and all it makes sense. And, like I previously stated, and since you do have a V1, a T-Trim will bolt right up to your existing bracketry...I'm just saying...;)

So pull the compressor housing off the blower (bolts on back side around perimeter) and clean it out really good. Then determine how the hell sand got in there in the first place.

Next pull the tensioner off, beat the bearings out of it, and head on down to you favorite supplier of automotive type bearings to match them up.

Then your repair gets real cheap real quick :D

Ya, lol, I wish :) and ya thanks for the tips. I found out how the sand got in there. I think that one of the owners lived on a dirt road cause there was a LOT of mud, sand and dirt. The way it got there is because the intake tube that goes from the filter to the blower curves right underneath the car so I guess the person was driving and broke it on a speed bump or something so he replaced it with a PVC plumbing pipe. It works, but he didn't cut it to well so there was a little gap and a while ago, we took out the whole intake (the PVC part and the filter pipe that goes to the SC) and ther was a lot of oil and dirt. Pretty much sludge. So we trimed it better and now there is no gap :)

the tensioner pulley is a ford piece (incase you didnt notice the ford emblem on it). youd be better off ordering it from a ford dealership or a ford parts dist. online somewhere. if i remember correctly, there is a part number cast on the pulley.

or you could even go to autozone and they could cross reference the PN and find a replacement pulley. id guess 15-30 bucks.....

vortech parts are about a 300% mark up. i ordered a brass piece i needed, and when i got it, i realized that i could have found it at just about any auto store for about 5 bucks.....they charged me 75!!!!

oh, and by the way, the oil in the intake isnt a good sign. your getting a lot of blow-by. you may be needing a rebuild soon, sorry.
