View Full Version : Running mechanical gauges in a 4th gen

I am going to put a water and oil gauge in my 94 camaro, and my dilema is running the senders. I like mechanical gauges better, but it looks like its going to be a PITA to run the water line. You guys have any suggestions on how to get the lines in to the cabin?
Thanks

Passenger side hole in the bulk head. Or Driver side under the Mc there are some openings. IMHO be safer and easier to run electrical

Yeah I was the same way and I decided to go electrical

I like mechanical, I dont see what is the big deal for the water one.

I just ran it through the corner of the engine bay, there was some room to slide the cable thing through and it comes right to the piller.

It doesnt interfere with the door either.

Don't mean to thread jack but I am doing the same thing mech oil and coolant temp gauges in the center console area and I was wondering where is the best/most common line to tap into for the oil pressure and I was looking at the passengers side head and looks like if I sink the sensor into the head like I would like to do like in a common sbc the Exhaust manifold would interfere.

for the oil sensor behind the intake on the driver side and for the water one use the passenger side head port . theres an allen bolt plug that you just have to remove and it leaves the factory 1 still working so your not screwing with the pcm temps...

Thanks a lot man! then just gotta mount them and get the lines into the car. I'll post pics when I'm done. I made a gauge pod to fill in the gap between my LT1 dash and LS1 center console. I love it.

I was toying with this idea also, I was going to use electrical ones though. I think fuel would be a good one to have to, I dont think factory guages give you an acurate reading until its to late.

That's how I hooked my water temp gauge up. . .

Any more details on the exact location of the oil pressure sender location? I have been looking for quite a while, and didn't notice anything behind the intake, but it's hard to see back there, so I'm not sure if it's just something I missed or what. . .

93 cars have the oil pressure sensor on the bottom driver's side of the block (usually gets broken with the installation of headers). But there is a plug on the back driver's side of the manifold that you can run a sending unit from there. Pretty sure it's just a square topped plug

That's where they are on later years manifold.

Cool, thanks. I'll take a look and see if I can find it when I get back to the states. I just bought about $3k worth of parts for my car, including headers, so I'll see what I can do about getting that gauge hooked up while the exhaust is out of the car.

It'll be easier to see if you have the EGR deleted

Have the non-EGR equipped headers and block off plates waiting for install back in the States, just need to get home and find the time to get it all installed. Thanks again!

Anybody have any pics of their aftermarket gauges?

I ran the autometer mechanical coolant temp one in my rx7 when I had the lt1 in it, just hooked it up to the passenger side head and it worked great. I am also selling it right now if anyone wants it, I went with a different setup when I did the lsx swap.

good stuff... I was more concerned about getting the "hoses" to the gauges, and ended up running electric gauges for simplicity. Thanks for all the posts guys! BTW the oil sender is a real PITA if you dont have some short wrenches or a very deep socket

Is there a plug above the filter on the '97 block that could be used for a mechanical oil psi gauge? My oil psi has been dropping here lately after it runs for a while and I want to make sure its not the gauge. I let it idle for 15 to 20 minutes the other day and when I went to take off it said check gauges and the oil psi was at 0. Gave it a little gas and it rose up.
