Got up, saw that it was absolutely gorgeous today, so I said "Hell, I'm taking the Vette to base to hit the gym!"
First up, the new TB fixed the idle flare/hang that I was having on the Vette. One for me. Then, on the way to base, an 04 GTO wanted to play. Two for me in a big way. :D
After the gym, head to my buddies house to take him for a spin in the Vette since he's not been in it with the new setup (He's got an 05 GTO himself). Took him for a spin then threw him the keys. Got back to his place, and helped pull his manifold and TB so he can send them to Formato for tuning. About the time we finish, another on of our friends stopped by (who lives right down the street from my friend) and says "Hey, I'm putting the valve cover back on so you can hear the car run.
His car is a 06 GTO, and he got an oil indicator and knocking on the way to work last week. Dealership said top and bottom end, new motor, $6500. Doc (buddy with 05 GTO) and I say let us look at it. So we walk down, and listen to the car. Definitely NOT bottom end noise, pure valvetrain. Rip off the passenger side valve cover, find the #8 intake rocker loose as can be. Pull the pushrod, it's straight. Initial diagnosis is a collapsed lifter.
So in about 45 minutes we pull his valve covers and top end just about down to dropping the exhaust to pull the head. On a whim, we pull the valley plate. Not a collapsed lifter, a SPUN lifter. This job just got more in depth now, as it chewed and grooved the hell out of the cam lobe (Yes I'm making him a lamp). So now he's getting everything for a cam swap and we're going to slap that all back together once he's got the parts.
I LOVED the impromptu wrenching I got to do today. Now off to a buddy's for burgers, drinks, and debauchery!!!!!
