View Full Version : Sleepy eye mod?

Has anyone developed a sleepy eye mod for the Firebirds? Its common on 240SX's and Ford Probes. Basically the headlights are altered to only open partway so as to avoid "ugly mode" and to provide and effect like the Acura NSX headlights. I want to do the "sleepy eyes" mod in a way that would retain the motor functionality. I have one headlight motor out, and could possibly just do a permanent sleepy eye, but want to replace the motor and have them move.

I think I would then either adapt 93-97 Camaro headlights to fit or make a projector setup to work with the low eyes. Here is a picture of a Probe with the mod I'm talking about:

To anyone else on the road besides 240sx owners they just think their headlights are broken.

I think I'm going to crank my headlights down and do a walk around and see how it would look. I don't know how it would look on a Firebird, but I just want my car to be unique, and thought of this as a possibility. I really just wanted to see someone who had done it before to decide if I want to do it or not. If I do it I will make sure its reversible in case I end up not liking it.

On a tangent though, anyone have fog lights in their 93-97 Formula/Base nose? I'm trying to decide on what foglights I want. I work at AutoZone and we have some projector fogs I'm thinking about trying.

Imho fogs look stupid on formulas. My 2 cents.

Were there even factory fog lamps on formulas. I would invest your time in to making a projector hid setup for your factory lamps if you are going to take the time to modify your lighting. Nothing from Autozone, Which I believe they carry the Pilot brand and I sold those at my old job are bascially worthless.

x2. also... anything with pop up lights generally looks stupider with them up. why would you want them half-way? it's mind-bottling!!! that's why we have parking lights. and to base this off of an import model? on a firebird? whhhhhaaat? my brain hurts. if i saw a bird driving around with this sleepy eye whatever, i'd probably take a hammer to it and fix it. :P

This is my car with fogs I got from autozone. I thought they looked better than stock and the increased viability is fantastic. As far as them looking gay that is a personal opinion. I think they look great on my car. It all comes down to what you want to do with your car. Yes it was a option to get factory fogs on a formula but they were boxy and didn't fit the look of the car. You can find a kit on ebay from time to time they were made by SLP. That is why I went with the ones I have and they are by pilot. I have had them on my car for 2 years and haven't had any trouble with them.

A permanent sleepy eye? Sorry, but that sounds like an awful idea. It's ugly on probes/nissans and it will be a thousand times worse on a formula. I'd advise against it, but it's your car. Let us know what you end up doing.

Those actually look pretty good, but usually fog lights on formulas just look strange.

LOL! :ban: :tt2:

To the OP: You are going to hate it once you do it. It will more than likely look retarded, and quite honestly that is something a ricer would do....

But hey, like Sabaktes stated, it's your ride so do as you wish.

its your car man... I suggest you do like you said and just crank them half way and get a good look at it before altering anything. If YOU dig it.... get to work modding. if you dont, no time or money lost....

I definitely think 93-97 Firebird/TAs need them, along with some smaller headlights. I always thought about it when I had my 97.

I'm not the only one then. I cranked my headlights down about as far as I would want them, and can't decide if I like it or not. The shape of our headlight doors is irregular and doesn't look as clean as the ones on other cars with square headlight doors like 240sx's, NSX, vettes, etc. I'm going to keep toying with the idea and try to make it look decent. Something has got to change though, my frog-eyes are driving me nuts lol

Throwing this out there, What if you used the slimmer camaro headlamp and adapted it into the firebird housing? That light it about half the size of the firebirds

If you rely want to do this, I suggest doing a projector conversion first. Then you wont fuck up the light pattern (and that conversion is sick as hell). Roll em down and post some pics! I think it might look decent...

I can't believe this thread. Sleepy headlight mod really???!!! I want my car to wallow around the lane like I'm drunk and high, so I need the 'Dopey look'. Can anyone recommend me a knife that can UNSAFELY cut off chunks of tread on one side of the tire so I can achieve this aspired look. STUPID!!
