View Full Version : Pedal hits the floor

Car is some what scary to drive, the brakes are slow to respond and they go to the floor every time. Which can make for some dicey situations, seems to be the worst at low speeds. I checked the vacuum and it was right at 10" idle so it technically has enough to operate the power brakes, revved it up and the vac climbed up. Also with a vac issue wouldn't the brakes be super hard to operate but still work if you really hammer down on the pedal? These brakes really just suck, I'm thinking 1. Bad MC or 2. Air, maybe both, my abs inop light is on, so it may have gotten air in the abs module. The brakes worked fine when we did the ls1 brake swap, but then it sat for half a year during the heads and cam. The fluid level seems fine also. I ordered a new a/c delco master cylinder to see if that helps. Any tips on bench bleeding it?

If you know anyone that has a bench bleeding kit, then thats what you would want... Makes things a ton easier. Sounds like some air got into the lines somehow while it was sitting, might want to get that ABS figured out too. Might have something to do with it.

Loose connection somewhere? No wet spots on any of the lines?

My buddy just had this problem on his '01 SS,the cure was a new brake booster...the original had a small slit in the diaphram.

Sure it wasn't a bad master cylinder? From what I understand the booster makes the pedal easier to push, so I imagine a bad booser makes your pedal really hard. My pedal drops to the floor and the brakes are really slow. I was kinda poking about another neath the car, the wheel lines seem dry as can be, how ever that soft line by the axle, felt some liquid that appeared to be clear. Thinking I may have found my leak, I hope. I almost hit a Prius of all cars, so until I get this sorted out, the car isn't moving.

Neil, when I put my ss brake lines on I also went ahead with earl's speed bleeders. I think they would be a good investment for you and made bleeding the brakes a breeze.

Thanks Jay, I'll pick some up. Talked to Joe last night and he was saying it sounds like the master is dead and he's help me bench bleed the new one. Still have to bleed the brakes after that though.

Did you guys get if figured out? I was going to call but had to occupy the kids while my wife had her study group.

Had to come off shore for work, waiting on RMS to get the part from AC Delco.
