View Full Version : Whats your MPG with your set up?

Im pulling the motor in my z and getting parts together to rebuild. Ive never blown up an LT1 before but this one is making a death noise. Im not wanting to go crazy just a stock rebuild with better pistons and a cam. I want a motor I can drive 2000 miles on vacation and not be killing me on gas but still take to the track. Maybe 350-400 whp all motor?

So my question is what kind of MPG would I be getting with a mild to large cam, some mild porting and slightly raised compression? Of course it will have headers, a good tune, its a M6, etc... What kind of numbers are you guys getting with your set ups?

Oh yea Ive got 4.10 gears also...thanks!

right now with the cc503 im getting 17mpg untuned.. going to get a tune in 2 weeks

friend of mine with cam and ported heads got 27 hwy mpg tuned

BLK95-Z

Thats about the size cam Im thinking of running. I would think with some tuning you could go from 17 to maybe mid 20s...and that would be fine with me. I realize city driving is always going to be crappy if your making any power Im talking about 6th gear 75mph highway.

lol wow thats pretty bad, Ive never had a internally altered engine before is the reason why Im asking. I dont want to mod my car if its going to make me get 12 mpg. Thats what I would expect a lightly modded carbed car to get. I realize adding mods makes it less efficent but its still fuel injected. How much power are you making?

Bolt ons. About 20 city / 26 highway.

I've known people to get upwards of 30 highway on a bolt on car.

Something must be wrong with my setup. Long tubes, full exhaust, 1.6rr's, LT4 springs, air foil, LT4 Knock Module, and a few other odds and ends, and I average 17mpg city/highway.

i have a small cam and comp springs. gmpp 1.6 rr's. hooker mids and slp loudmouth. SLP CAI, A4 with 4.10s and a pretty good tune and i get aound 18ish (depending on whats on the street) in town and i get on average 24 on the highway. but it is kansas and roads are flat! cruise control at 2700 rpm = 67 mph.

I get about 8 or so, not that I care though. If I want to drive it I usually have to put $20 in it. I just putt around town with it though. My blue car LT1 T56, gets mid 20's.

Looks like every one making some power has the worst milage witch would be expected, with the exception of Popo. Looks like forced induction gives you power and fuel economy, I just dont have the $$ for it. Maybe he just obeys the law and never gets on it :D

I guess since this is my first build Ill keep everything mild, I really dont want to have to put $20 in it every time I drive it. Any suggestions on a cam that works well with bolt ons but doesnt drink gas?

I've gotten 29 in my car before, and I know of people getting 31+ I don't do highway roadtrips in my car much so I usually get 26-28 highway. Your 20 city is pretty impressive though -- is that purely city or combined?

It's mostly city. I haven't calculated it in awhile, since I don't drive it a whole lot once I get to school. When I do it's usually just a few blocks away since Stillwater isn't very large.

fair enough, I've never been to Stillwater, just Tulsa. I live in a very urban city where theres a stop light every 100 feet. I don't do too bad (15-16 MPG) but I'd love to get 20. I get about 20-22 when I do about 33% highway, 67% city)

My cars power doesn't have everything to do with the mileage. My transmission does though. A 5200rpm converter tends to use up gas a little bit, lol.

I have gotten as good as 21 MPG on the highway with my Z28 in my sig, and if I am a lot of WOT then about 10 MPG. I average about 15-17 MPG.

Get this though; in my Formula in my sig, I average about 9 in town and 19 on the highway (about 14 on average).

I still don't understand sometimes how my 200+ RWHP car gets better mileage than the less powerfull one.

i'm running E85... I think the last 10 gallons before my car got torn down lasted about 140 miles... and that was 100% highway running 9.7-9.8 A/F :) in the city i probably get about 8 mpg

I may have been under a rock when this was discussed but why are some of you guys running E85? Is it our alternative to run with all our sensors instead of leaded race gas?

Not really sure why anyone would want to run it on an N/A car. Personally I wouldn't really use it on an FI car, but if tuned correctly it can be an alternative to race gas.

Personally seeing it do its corrosion damage and destroying some pumps, and then getting lousy mileage with it, it ends up not saving anything IMO.

I like the idea of meth injection and intercooling instead of race gas for FI, but if I had to pick between spending the big $ on race gas vs E85, I would still rather run race gas. But I know some that have choosen to go that route.

but doesnt race gas foul the 02s? What do people generally run for fuel if you have a very high compression fuel injected N/A setup?

Premium usually does the trick for N/A. Although if the setup is so high (probably track only car) that it requires higher, then I would imagine race gas.

Mostly the guys who need race gas or meth injection are the FI guys or guys running N20 that need the extra octane to keep them away from detonation than just N/A cars.

To my knowledge, race gas does not foul out your O2 sensors. Its just damned expensive and thats why most try to find alternatives to using it.

To add to this, LEADED race gas will junk up and ruin the O2s if used often enough or the O2s are old.

But unleaded race gas is nothing more than higher octane gasoline.

If you are not tuned for the race gas and use it, cars tend to run more rich with it (hence why it eliminates knock due to too much timing) and running excessively rich can foul out the plugs/O2s

So mid-20s on the highway is about what can be expected from a relatively stock LT1 Camaro with T56? If this is true, then my 240SX will probably do better on gas with the LT1 than with the stock KA24DE! The KA24DE might be just a 2.4l four cylinder engine. But it is NO gas miser. If you get 27MPG on the freeway with that engine, consider yourself lucky. I just have to wonder where all that gas goes with that engine.

Unleaded race gas can usually be found at or near 100 octane. In SE WI by me is $6.4x per gallon. wasn't all that bad a few years ago when gas here was average $4.3x for 87 octane.

the LT1 - 21mpg in town (very best i got, and it never went over 1800rpm), worst was 13mpg (first week i had it lol:devil:), so far i've been around 19mpg in town with an auto 3.23 posi car.

Duramax - 24mpg cruising 55mph. 15mpg @ 65mph with a 9500lbs/28ft travel trailer. not bad for an 4 ton pig (8122lbs exactly with me in it and a full tank).:D

I'm a M6.

Since my previous posts, I pulled my plugs, and re-gapped them, and fixed a vacuum leak. I drive about 60 miles a day, in rush hour, and average about 19-20mpg mixed as of lately. If I stop at a cheap gas station with lower quality gas, I get about 17mpg.

I keep getting an intermittent code for O2 sensors, so hopefully those will help me a bit too.
