Well actually the deal found me. i pretty much retired from searching craigslist for cars and stuff cuz i dont need anything else the garage and driveway is flooded with fbodys. But the other day i had a friend text me and he says my buddy has a 1979 trans am forsale has to get rid of it asap for 500.00 do u want it. Of course im interested, later on he sends me pictures and it looks decent. It has a 455 bored .030 over, headers cam, true duels, shaker hood, 4bbl carb automatic and t tops. Its been sitting 13 years cuz the distributor broke off and the intake needs pulled to get the rest of it out. Well i went to look at it in person and the car is rough. Laser straight body with a few little rust holes in the lower quarters and lots of surface rust. Floors are solid though. Interior is screwed though and the windshield is all broken badly. It would take a decent amount to work to make the car look like it should. Well the guy needs the car gone so hes going to send it to the junk yard if i don't buy it. Has clear title. I wanted to see how low he would go so i offerd 400 and he said no hed rather see it go to the junk yard. Do u guys think the car is worth 500 and should i save it from the junk yard? it comes with a few distributors, another set of tail lights, more ground effects a set of 455 heads, and carbs and stuff. but the motor is complete now except the dist shaft is broke. i cannot decide :(

I would say quit while you are ahead. You will end up paying money to "save" these cars while ultimately neglecting the ones you are working on. Unless you are made of money I would say pass. I know here in ILlinois every vehicle has to be tagged and registered or it is considered abandoned. Ultimately its up to you , but this is just my .02

i pretty much agree with you, my car could be running 8s like a lot of others on here if i had put the money from the others into mine lol. but i keep getting side tracked. no im broke as shit lol i have no job an unemployment runs out next week. But the only thing i was thinking about is buy it and then get it running which shouldnt cost anything then re sell it and make a lil money and save it from the crusher. Its not that strict around here about unregistered vehicles i have 4 right now but it would have to go to my grandmas house being there isnt room here.

I feel ya. I am on disability and have not worked since Halloween, and I keep getting sweet deals dropped on my lap. The only problem I have is I physically can't do the work. I would if I could seeing as how I have nothing but time.

they made 116,000+ of them in 79. The 455 is good for about 190 hp.. LOL even fully restored is is probally not worth more than 10 grand. You will tie that up in parts and time in no time. I woud save the 500 bucks for something for one of the current cars you have. I have to stop spending money on saving Junk cars too. My garage is getting full

You know how I feel Paul, I was willing to fly down and buy it, then rent a uhaul truck and trailer to drive it back, however it aint gonna happen in the next day or 2...
Actually, I was willing to pay you to do body work and shoot it all one color, then worry bout getting the motor and interior done later....
Text me if you are still interested, but he is still gonna have to be more flexible than a day or two...
PS-that was very dickheadish of him to say that he would rather crush it then sell it to you for 100 less than what he is asking...... Cuz a yard is gonna give him 100-200 for that car based on weight...

jaysz2893 thats prob what im going to do, it just the motor is pretty built and could be worth a lil bit lol. the motor is a 1976 455 punched out .30 with dome pistons and junk and a big cam so he says lol.

thats up to u popo. im just not to sure bout the body work. to me its not worth 500 bucks to fix and sell, but its worth the 500 to save from being destroyed. its going to cost 500 for the car and 130 to get it to where it would have to sit. if u did all that with coming to get it and stuff ud have well over 1000 in it before paint if he would take the 350 or 400 then maybe but he wont. he doesnt want to wait he wants it gone hes being a complete doushe, and it doesnt even look like hes moving out like he says he has to. i think the county is busting his ass for to many cars lol.

a lot of ppl say a lot of things.
a 76 455 is good for 200 hp, even punched out you will prob not break 300ish.
the breakdown of 1976 455's is:
-L75 455cid w/M21(4 speed)- 7,528 produced
L75 455cid, 4bbl, 200hp@3500rpm(net), 330ft/lbs@2000rpm(net), bore/stroke of 4.15 x 4.21", 3.25" main bearing diameter, 2-bolt main caps.
Block codes/applications: -
-6H, L75 455cid head, secondary stamp of 6, 124cc, 2.11" intake valve, 1.66" exhaust valve, 7.6:1 compression ratio, screw-in rocker studs.
**Note: Other variations of the 455 head have been discovered for the 1976 model year. Most common has the same specifics as the 6H but are coded 6X-6. 6X-2 has been rumored as a possible head.
Intake:
-Casting number 525355, same 400/455 4bbl cast iron manifold, EGR, "D" shaped secondary openings.
IMHO you can get a new gm crate motor with 4 bolt mains that make more power out of the box than screwing with that boat anchor..

the mid-late 70's were the "dark days" of performance
6.6 Liters, 200 HP and mid 7's compression = POO

how bad is the rust? I'm only a couple hours away, have trailer, and would be interested if it's straight and solid. Could pick it up this weekend if all is good.
Have any bigger pics?
95formula383lt1

those are the only pics i got. the rust is mostly surface. the hood hinges though are used an broke so it just sits there. the rear quarters have some holes in the bottoms nothing really that bad. but around the spoiler has some decent bubbles an holes and is pushing the drivers side spoiler piece up u can kinda see it in the pic. it def needs a whole body restoration and a decent about of money and work. its missing door panels dash is pretty messed up from the windshield floor pans felt decent. tops didnt seem to leak. the deck lid had a few rust holes a few meaning one or 2 small ones. i looked at the car at 8 or 9 at night with a flash light. underneath looked like it was only surface rust on the frame but nothing bad. pm me if ur interested. he said it will be gone by tonight or tomorrow. i think hes just being a dick.

also if its a 455 its not the factory motor. the 455 was discontinued after 1976. it either had a 400 (4 speed car) 403 (auto) or a 301 (auto) and maybe 305 (4 speed) although the 305 4 speed might not have started till 1980.

oo and that he put 2500 in the motor, plus another 2800 in vo-tech training course which is where he learned an built the motor lol. and he got the motor from a junk yard, and threw everything away inside and ordered all new.

I'd tell the guy to make a paper weight out of it! What's a $100 difference when he wont get nothing out of it at the scrap yard. Sounds like the guy is full of shit.
