I am thinking about putting my '96 firebird on the road this week even though my original plan was to wait at LEAST into mid february if at all possbile, i only drove the car 3 times since getting it, its eating away at me and the weather here in Northwestern new jersey has been nice here, warm temps and no snow, sunny mostly. I was dying to drive it last weekend. The only thing that just gets to me is driving it in the salt after any possible snowstorms we might get, i feel like the car would get ruined or it would get all scuffed up from the salt, i'd spray it off once a week. I don't have a job right now and my truck is eating away at me gas cost wise, and i would register the car but only drive it if needed, like to and from school, and to get gas or whatvever cause its better on gas and i can put it into the garage, i would be conservaticve with it until spring. It would sit more than the truck, but still be more liveable and plus ill get my fix from driving it lol. Should i jsut go ahead and register it this firday after i get the intake manifold leak fixed or try to wait it out? all the snow is gone now too lol i cannot afford to insure two vehicles its one or the other.. plus i want to get good at driving it too before spring, its my first manual car.

Does anyone else drive their f-body's in the winter where it snows and gets salty???? How are you guys managing keeping your cars looking good?

If you can only insure one at a time , I agree with chris...wait. I drive my car as much as possible as long as there is no snow on the ground.

I would wait as well. No use in starting that car eating cancer known as rust or making it any worse if you don't have to.

Where did the car come from? Chances are, it has already been driven in the salt/snow.

I think he wrote NJ in a past thread.

Even so, no point in making it any worse than it already is.

Depends on the conditions. If the roads are wet and have been treated with salt, then no, don't drive it. If the roads are bone-dry, then go for it. Hell, I drive my car during the winter as long as the roads are dry. Not to mention I clean my undercarriage thoroughly every time I wash it. As long as he gives the car proper care, then there shouldn't be an issue.

Not that my opinion should carry much weight, but you also have to consider road hazards from future weather too. I recently lost a good portion of my sideskirts/ground effects/whatever you want to call them from ice chunks falling off of other vehicles.

I would wait.

I dont drive mine in the winter. DE is bad for salting and sanding the hell out of the roads. we had about 1 inch of snow last night. There is literally 1/2 inch of salt on my road infront of my house now. I also have to drive across the grass to get to my driveway from my shop where the camaro is stored. That really limits my ability to drive the car in crappy weather.

here in va it costs more to do that remove it from the road than it does to just keep it and put storage insurance on it re registration fees and insurance hikes are a bitch

If I remember right, he said he only has money to insure one of his vehicles at a time.... Im assuming that means the Bird is sitting , unregistered/uninsured...... not smart IMO
