@Dan I personaly would go get some grade 8 bolts and lock nuts and washers to fit.

I used a BF dead blow hammer and gave it a hand full of love taps, mine didn't line up well either but you can muscle it in there. No biggie, you're doing fine!
Also don't tighten anything up until they're all in, every little bit of wiggle helps.
