People blow them up all the time?

do you have and mods done to the 8.1L / 8100 vortec / 496cid BIG BLOCK?
my father has a 2001 2500 crew cab 2wd with the big block and Allison Transmission it has about 265k and is all stock with a K&N filter.
i kinda want to get his motor and mod it some and use it as a motor to swap into a something ... maybe even a 4th gen Firebird

The 8.1 is a good motor, especially with the LS ignition. But, it's still an old school BBC. It would be cheaper to do a 4.8/5.3/6.0 build, but the big cubes would sure give bragging rights. They eat gas but have plenty of power and grunt.

You don't see it often, but many people have swapped them into all kinds of cars/rat rods/etc.

My Dad has a 4.8 in his '00 Silverado that I called dibs on years ago if something ever happened to the truck. Haha - 200k and runs better than the 5.3 in my truck. I think it's a factory freak that needs some turbo love...and it would all look great in my third gen.

The gen 7 8.1 is a cool motor but also an oddball. There isn't any compatibility with the top end so modding is difficult. The gen 6 454 from the late 90s is a better choice for modding despite less cubes. It's full roller, 4 bolt main, and will take mark iv heads.

Imagine... Turbo ls power without the turbo.
