I wonder if you could clear coat bare aluminum to protect the finish and help keep it from staining.

Almost 100% positive you can, not sure if you need an actual painted surface for that though..

You can just needs to be cleared. If its an engine part I recommend duplicolor engine enamel clear. Rustoleum is too thin and sags very easy.

I finally pulled the intake out of the bag briefly to take a pic.

I didn't realize that he had already painted it with Metalcast and then hit it with 2 coats of clear. Still, its damn near perfection for a stock intake.

Weekend Update: While I expected to be starting my bottom end on Saturday, I was sadly misled. I found out that the machine shop which I have bought all the parts for my build had stopped carrying bearings on the shelf for a SBC/LT/LS and I would have to order them from the warehouse. I was given a Monday delivery and sent on my way. I spent the rest of my day cleaning up the garage for the build and making a new parts pile for the bead blaster or wire wheel. I did manage to get my camera out to the garage, but the batteries were dead, simple fix but just my luck. Here are some of the Pics:

First off this is Gunner, he will probably be in most of my pics. He's a monster at 5 months and already a touch under 55 lbs.

    Most important part of all.

Today was an interesting day. The bearings came in around lunch but I was unable to pick them up myself due to yet another Meth Lab being found in the county and being one of the only Hazmat Techs and company officers available, I got volun-told to be on standby and not leave town. Around 3 I got the all clear and was asked by a friend If I wanted to take a ride up to Horsham, Pa to get a part for his LQ4 3rd gen build. We got back around 8:30 after way to much traffic and non-driving idiots. The new bearings were dropped off by another friend while I was up north. Time to get to work, I checked my ring gaps and slipped the rings onto the pistons and after much waiting and delay, the first piston slipped into its new home. I was able to get 2 in before I forced myself inside for the night. Single pic:

First of many...well, maybe just 8.

Tomorrow, the rest will find their way home and hopefully be able to bolt the oil pan on as well.

Ok, heres a quick question. I'm using Speed Pro Moly faced rings on my pistons. My ring gaps on the first 2 were .020 for both the compression and scraper rings. I wanted it to be more around .016 - .018 for the first ring and .020 on the second. Now for the problem; on the third set the ring are .022 for both. Is this acceptable?

The ring end gap on the oil rings is not that critical. .022 is more than acceptable for the oil rings.
