Lil update on Ponch. He's been joining me on a lot of work functions. Yesterday we did my two community day. Actually at the request of the chief. Like a champ, in 80+ degree weather, Ponch greeted kids of all ages with me FOR 7 hours.

Poor guy seems to be struggling with his baby teeth. They are not falling out as his adult teeth are coming in. In the pic his lower jaw is double teeth from k9 to k9

Well finally took him to the vet dentist... its a definite we need to have the teeth pulled... now here is the dilema...

If we have him fixed they can do the teeth during the same time for like 30 bucks more... (i wont say the total yet so it does not sway ur answers on the next question )

Do i want him fixed? Poor pup is only about 10 months old...

They say fixing prolongs a pets life. I really dont see a the point of keeping them intact unless you are planning on breeding them

Yes, neutering males prevents testicular cancer and enlargement of the prostate gland, and greatly reduces their risk for perianal tumors.

It also helps to prevent and / or reduce undesirable behaviors some dogs exhibit such as urine marking, humping, aggression, and the urge to roam.

If he was not old enough or developed enough the vet would not recommend or perform the surgery. Also completing this sooner than later helps to prevent the undesirable behaviors, as I have experience with older dogs that still have aggressive tendencies and urge to mark even after the procedure. It is best to get it early in my opinion to prevent them from developing these tendencies.

Ive started researching and everything u guys say is correct... but... im also reading that fixing dogs also puts them at higher risk for many other diseases/health issues that they wouldn't normally be threatened by.

    Ugh...

Interesting - I did a search on risks pertaining to neutering and see your point. This website seemed to have some good data and detail concerning benefits and risks.

    http://www.dogs4dogs.com/blog/2015/0...alth-problems/

I always just kind of went by what I had heard in the past and didn't research any health risks from the procedure. Now looking at this I don't know that I would do it, or at least not until a later age.

If you don't have issues with marking or aggressive behavior now, then you may not have it later either. I have had male dogs that marked and did not mark that were not neutered, or at least not neutered until a later age on one.

I would probably keep him intact if it were me for now based on this information, as it appears the health risks outweigh the benefits and it is relatively easy to prevent unwanted breeding by being a responsible pet owner.
