Pulling my motor out , Swapping in a 5.3 Lq4 and homemade rear mount turbo No more LTX :shame: but going with a turbo:metal:
I'm getting splayed mains, new rods, pistons, heads, cam and intake to try and hang in modified NA. Also loosing the abs and heat this winter to shave some more weight. Getting married in November and can't buy any car parts till the wedding and reception are paid for, never mind the box in the garage containing stock head and intake castings ready to ship out.:secret: There's some deals you just can't pass up!

We don't really know yet! There's only been 2 and they were both at KCIR in Kansas City, MO. There's a good chance it's gonna be somewhere else this year but it's unknown where yet.

I'm switching to a monoblade tb,3900(from 4200) and getting a dyno tune.

My plan this year is to do the exact opposite of what I did last year :jest:
Last year I took the car apart in Feb to change a bunch of things, and then I ended up scrambling to get the car put back together in time to make the shootout. End result, nothing was dialed in at all. Ended up winning my class, but only by sheer luck.
This year, I'm going to concentrate on dialing in what I've already got. The only parts I plan to add are Strange SA/springs on the front, and ditching my 17" wheels for some big-n-littles. I've been working on getting the car tuned properly (been on a mail-order tune in the past). Then a bit of weight reduction. I plan on hitting the track hard this spring to get in as much seat time as possible and get the susupension working like it should.
Being as my car is an M6, I'm patiently awaiting announcement of this year's classes and class rules so I can figure out what tire I need to be practicing on....:D

I might throw another cam in, def finish up the chassis(shocks, rear drag bar etc.).Possibly have Tick build my trans. Maybe N20 but wont use it for the Shootout.
I did the same thing as Colin last year scrambeled to get everything done to make the shootout. I was testing for the very first time in qualifing, then took 2nd place in my class by pure stupidity. :(!

No more LTX :shame: but going with a turbo:metal:
Yea I never realized how cheap the motors actually are. Like 350-500 bucks. Hoping that selling my cammed motor and built trans there should be enough to swap in a stock motor and with my tax return build a turbo kit :metal:

I hope to do some front suspension work (all stock now), and get the thing dialed in. Hope I don't break it before the next shootout!

The plan is do a cam swap but still not 100% whether it's going to be a HR or SR yet. I know SnakeKilla picked up some good gains with his HR swap. Maybe loosen the converter just a little more.
jakesz28
09-29-2009, 12:31 AM
Well I may have to leave the combo as it is for another year. Just get the suspension dialed in and the converter loosened some. Dart is either going to have to get a 4.125 bore block or I'll be changing platforms or power adders. I want an 8.5 et in this thing. I don't think I can do it with nitrous and a 23* head. Can't change the head unless I can get the bigger bore.
I will be lightening the car a little over the winter and cleaner it up so it looks better.

Probably going to finish up building the the spare LT1 I have.
Eithers either going to be a 383, 396, (with spray) or 355 with either turbo or blower.
I need help deciding.

I wont be doing much. Swapping the 2:73 for some 3:42s. Try to add a stall and a tune. Then practice and save some cash for the next Shootout. I doubt that I will be in any other class than bracket, but at least I will be faster.

The 5.3/turbo setup is actually cheaper than me building a shortblock and adding a 2nd stage and standalone fuel system with my current heads/cam/etc. I just wonder if it will be as reliable as the lt1 and 250 jets.

The problem with moving the event is that it'll get further from everybody else in the process. You move it east guys from the west won't show you move it south guys from the north won't show and so on. Kc is dead in the middle and I'd put money on it's a hell of alot cheaper to rent then Memphis' track. I'll attend where ever it's at regaurdless because I'm willing to sacrafice some extra spending money on hotels, food and gas to keep a great event going and support an awsome group of people. The aftermarket looks at events like this as to wether or not to make more parts. If more people don't attend the 2010 year I fear the lt1 will start to fade into the distance and the aftermarket for it as well. I hope that doesn't happen.

Our main point of having it at KC the past two years is because it is dead center and gives everyone equal opportunity to make it. BUT........since we have not had any support (racers) from the west coast I am not partial to catering to them anymore. It may move a little east.

I agree with you. While I think I was the one who originally suggested KC and got Tony hooked up with the right people at the track, I wouldn't mind traveling to an event.
I still get a kick out of people that say they want to have the race 'central' but then they throw out options like Maple Grove, or another track that is on the EAST COAST. :jest: :brows:

You know I'm down for where ever Tony. I do agree with you people need to grow a set, deal with the distance and just bring they're ride out to have fun and enjoy a great day of racing and talking to others. And as far as the fastest car winning yeah that doesn't always happen look at the roadmaster that's been there 2 years straight and done good in the bracket class. I'm just sayin everybody needs to try and make it and just like badhawk said they'll be hooked.

I am a perfect example of the fastest car does not always win. I was 2nd fastest qualifier but took home the win. Just took out Mike Jacobs at the tree. I remember racing at the Thunder Shootout back in 03-04ish. I qualified # 7 but ended up runner up. Just goes to show don't be scared of faster cars........they break, they loose traction, they have driving errors....etc.

Mike had you just left your car alone instead of pulling the air filter things could have turned out different. Tony treed Mike and Larry red lighted in his race. Carlos (Snakekilla) slept at the tree in his race and lost when him and Larry had the second and third fastest qualifying times in modified na. My point again the fastest doesn't always win.

Mike,
If you run about 25 to 30 sportsman races a year, you'll be good-to-go on the tree!
Warren
...I may have to get a practice tree...
Like Warren said, practice makes perfect. The biggest thing you have to do is stage your car the same way each time. After that, finding your place on the tree is not so bad. Pro-tree racing is fun. All you have to do is focus on the top bulb and leave the instant you see it. If you watch the whole tree you will be late.

Additionally, I practice what I preach! I typically run 25 to 30 sportsman races each year, which will be about 200+ passes down the track. All those races and passes helps you deal with the nerves and the intense pressure associated really big races.
While we use the .500 sportsman-tree in the NHRA series, that last amber and the .500 pro-tree are the same. Which also helps when you to go to the .500 pro-tree. And, as Daren has pointed out; staging the same every time in the beams and also having the "exact" same converter launch RPM each time will help ensure consistent reaction times.

Cam swap=done
Rear Comp 3way drag shocks = done
Front Strange DA shocks w 300# springs=done
Next is a UMI drag bar, wheel studs, then the trans will be shipped off over the winter.
After that drag brakes, lower a-arms, and new bumper supports to take some weight out. When this is done Ill probably need a cage.

I am hoping to make it this year since I will probably have a trailer by then. Should also have a S60 in and maybe a package from LE.... but who knows.
A matched Daren's reaction time on the .500 Pro-Tree in the semi-finals and I was happy with that!
I'm not sure that I would be a good guage. I pushed the tree hard on the first qualifying pass and went a little red. After that I aimed for .070 reaction times.:)

I'm thinking of running in a local heads-up series at KCIR. They are having a new class running a 26x8.5" tire. It'll be heads up, 1/8th mile. Should be pretty fun.

Well my intake is on it's way to Bauer Racing, hope to send the heads off shortly. My shortblock may make the trip back to Texas. Bryan at LME did a good job the first time around so I may just let them do a few upgrades. Just called T&D to get a price on 8 new intake rockers. I don't think the .250 offset I have now is enough. I'm thinking it might take a .375 offset and a little welding to get the heads were they need to be.
Would like to sell the plate and add a second fogger too.

I'd be happy to just attend, but I might con a buddy into letting me borrow his truck, and another into loaning me his car trailer and seeing what she'll do. Hoping I'll have my 383 built by then and a S60 under the car.
Are they gonna be strict on tech? I'll have everything my car needs to pass, but I don't have a cage and don't want one, it kinda takes away from my 'street car' thing.

Yeah mine didnt go as planned but Im hoping weds dyno is a little different. Guess we will have to wait and see. I dont see hows its possible for the car to make less HP/TQ across the board unless something was off. If I didnt have to work I would have just taken it to the track and find out in the real world what it does.
Lloyd is sure it will make more down low, slightly less in the mid range and from 4500 up should just keep making more and more over the old cam with a 15-18 more HP/TQ

Mike the dyno went very well today. The new Lloyd cam made more horsepower across the entire band. I wasn't able to get any torque readings though :( but the car made a bunch down low and a little more the rest of the way. The cam picked up about 30 hp. Ion Madtuner said it was one of the highest HR Lt1 cars he had ever seen. Now I have to see what this results at the track.
Printer wasn't working but Larry is going to e-mail me the graph.

TCI's horsepower calculator says I make 860 hp at my weight and mph.
I hope to trap 158-160 mph next year.
