View Full Version : Cat Delete

I am wanting to remove my cat and replace it with a straight pipe. From what I've researched my CEL will come on and I can fix that by a tune or buying 02 sensors.
I'd rather just wait until I get it tuned which will probably be sometime next summer. What do you all think?
(I don't have to worry about emission testing)
**Could someone also move this to Exhaust, sorry.

I don't even know why you have to inquire about it.
Ahem...

What's the big deal with having the SES light on? I've never seen my car's dash not lit up like a freakin christmas tree.

Correct it will trip the light (I'm guessiung by your sig pic you have a 97 OBD2 car), and it can be fixed by a tune or O2 simulators, not different O2's. I'm not sure if the code set by removing the cat will adversly affect the A/F ratio or vehicles performace, that would be my only concern. As far as when to do it, that's up to you but I'd wait for a tune so you can get the most out of it.

Whenever the SES is on, the ecu is supposed to command the fans to come on at all times, which could negatively impact the fan motors, not to mention make the car take longer to get up to proper operating temps

Are your guys cars using OBD1 or 2 PCM's? Maybe that's the difference? IDK just guessing!:hmm:

Some cars in 95 and all in 96 and after use on board diagnostiacs second generation PCM's or OBD2. The rest of the 95's and previous had OBD1 which had less sensors (moniters fewer systems) and is less sensitive to changes and setting diagnostic trouble codes (DTC's), SES light (service engine soon), check engine light, etc. Sometimes, depending on the code, in an OBD2 car when a code is set it changes the tables or parameters that the car runs on. ie a code is set it might turn on all fans, run rich as hell, and limmit timing advance to prevent leaning out and overheating (also known as "limp home mode"). It does this because it knows somthing's wrong and it's trying to prevent damage to the vehicle. I know when my car was all stock the rear O2 detected a misfire and started flashing the SES light, the car ran but had NO power and barley idled. Turns out it set a code for a "catlist misfire" so the PCM commanded the engine to run this way to prevent unburned fuel from entering the cat and causing perminant damage. That's a worst case situation and I don't know if this would happen to the OP but an OBD2 PCM will know if he removes the cat and at a mininum trip the light. Several people convert from OBD1 to 2 and the other way around depending on their setup, N/A, FI etc. Hope that helps.:D

I see. So I'm at an advantage because everything on my car (according to the dash) is broken, but she stills runs great -- due to it being a less sophisticated 1994. Sabaktes, having a 97 actually should be concerned about the SES because the OBD2 could kick in and try to "save" his car.. and all this time I've made fun of him for worrying about it :) Thanks for cluin' me in!

Mine is a 96 OBDII car , with no cats, no emissions, etc etc... Everylight possible including the "brake" light is on..... Car runs great, fans are not always running.....
And the lights make me look important when I drive at night....

Lol, that's how I see it. My ABS inop and my low coolant never go off either.
I have my fans tuned to come on at 160, they pretty much run full time but I don't hardly ever let the car idle (unless its from a cold start) and I figure they stay decently cool running down the road behind the radiator, so screw it.
I HATE it when ANY of my dash lights are on. Drives me nuts.
Makes me feel like I'm driving a hunk of shit.

For all of you people that are running around with your SES on:
Why don't you get it scanned and fix the problem?

i have a scanner and turn it off. but it just comes back on. the code for MAF high flow. need to get a hig flow MAF but the readings its giving on the scanner are fine. its just when i hit about 45k rpms and my boost goes up it throws the code.

Damn, I thought my bike that spins 17,500rpms was insane.
45k must be pretty intense ha

Because my tuner is the owner of PSI motorsports in NEW TRIPOLI PA. His name is FRANK and he is a ford guy...
I purchased the LT1 edit software and made my car the tester for him to learn LT1 programing. He is still working his way through it, but has no idea how to turn codes off with the LT1-EDIT.

X2, not all codes will affect the way the car runs. Things like the brake and abs inop and not P or powertrain codes and won't affect the performance. SES can but for several people it's probably and intermittant sensor problem that the pcm has seen and tripped the light.

on the 93 OBD1 if the SES light comes on the ECM reverts to closed loop and runs on factory presets. It runs OK but not like it should if it were going to closed loop and learning from the LBM. In other words If I have a light a sensor is bad and until I fix it I don't have full power, just factory presets.

X3..my light just came on the other week and i went straight to advance and got it scanned and came home and changed 02 sensor,,,no more light,,i wouldnt even drive my car when the light is on,,just anal like that i guess
My SES light came on once a couple weeks ago but went off after about 10 seconds. Even that was enough to let me park the car for a week lol.

You could just take out all of your warning lights in your cluster, but that would be bad considering they may be helpful lol
Off topic: I pass that place on my way to work, popo whats the deal with the black turbo TA that sits there, looks sexy as hell even with no front bumper lol
