Probably a stupid question.. but is there a certain reason why our cars are labeled to use 5w30 oil? Isn't 5 a little thin for start up? I've been using 10w30 for as long as I've had the car.
Or...am I understanding this totally wrong?

you cannot get a thin enough oil for start up. even 0 is too thick

I've always used 5, but this previous oil change I switched to 10 and it seemed to be a little rougher for the first 100 miles, after that its been smooth as silk.. well, loud, vidrating, badass silk.

I generally use 5w30 in the winter so it warms up faster and will use 10w30 in the summer.
