View Full Version : Aerochamber or Magnaflow for true duals?

In the spring I plan on doing symetric true duals over the axle. I want to replicate Gripenfelter's setup as seen here, because I believe that design has the best sound.
First of all, Ive ALWAYS preferred the sound of aerochambers over everything else. I have true duals on my 98 Z71 with aerochambers and they sound absolutely perfect. Theyre also cheaper!
That being said, aerochambers are a little bigger than the magnaflows. Do you think i will have issues fitting them? I am NOT lowered, and i dont really mind a low hanging exhaust as long as it can clear most speed bumps, driveways, etc. Its not a DD so i dont care.
Magnaflow: 4" x 9" x 14"
Aerochamber 4.75" x 10" x 14"
opinions?

3/4 of an inch is a lot under an fbody. I would just do some measuring and see if you could make it work. Personally, I hate how magnaflow sounds and prefer almost every other muffler out there over one. I like aerochamber and would really try to make them work, they are what you want and if you go with something else I can almost guarentee you will regret it.
I also like Flowmaster but then you are gonna sound like every mustang, chevy truck, and caprice thats on the road.

i have to disagree with that!
my car sounds nothing like any other car out there although there are simularities but the sound is actually different...i don't like mufflers under the floor pan on our cars seem to transfer too much harmonics and vibration, for me atleast....

thanks for the input. I think if I really need the 3/4" I could probably achieve it with a BFH:)

I plan on going overkill with exhaust hangers to eliminate any possible vibration. I highly doubt there will be any issues with harmonics with tailpipes going over the axle though. The reason I am putting the mufflers there is because I think exhausts that have tail-pipes sound throatier and better.

My flowmasters are welded right after the headers and my tailpipes go back to the axle, the only time i get vibration is when my ac is on and im sitting still.

why did you mount them up there, is there better clearance? You usually want the "restriction" to be as far away from the cylinder as possible. Im only moving mine ahead some becaues i think it sounds better and i should have plenty of scavenging with a dual 3" anyway.
Is that last picture from the same car? The suspension bits look different . . .

Yeah, my exhaust guy mounted them there for better clearance.
I had spiral flows before and hated them. I always wanted the one chambers and ended up getting a set welded in. I doubt im losing much power at all though being basically stock and those 1 chambers are supposed to flow extremely good.

no, I labelled it as my car, its just easy to overlook.

yea you should be fine if youre stock, 1 chambers shouldnt be very restrictive.

if you are going over the axles why not mount them after the axle?
i have made quite a few sets of duals and with the larger/ conventional style mufflers before the axle you are going to lose a ton of ground clearence.

The only reason is sound. every car I have heard with rear mounted mufflers hasnt appealed to me much better than the single exhaust. They all still had the "catback" sound just more refined. I want the bassy sound of a cammed muscle car and it seems that some tailpipe is necessary to get that.
I have a similar setup on my truck and that thing sounds like an old chevelle when i rev it up, even with cats and fuel injection.
Regarding the ground clearance - Ive got some more idea investigation to do yet, I dont make hasty decisions :)

the only mufflers i have been able to get to fit up before the axle are the single chamber flowmasters. they are probably the smallest ones out there and they still hung down farther than i liked but with the chassis mounted torque arm on the car we already lost alot of clearence by having to go around it that he didn't care.
i will eventually go with a whole new setup on the ss and take the duals down one side, over tha axle and exit on the left like the 2otl/ss style do. i will tuck 2 single chamber flows were the stock muffler went.
What do you think about this muffler:

I was thinking about doing duals running in the stock location, with this muffler as an x-pipe where the cat normally is.

why not just use these?

if you don't care about ground clearence go for it. i bet that would hit everything.

Im a big fan of chambered style mufflers also, there are alot of cars running a bullet style muffler that I think just sounds terrible, ruins a nice build. Ive heard a few magnaflow bullet style mufflers that sounded pretty decent...is probably the ones I will go with when I redo my exhaust. There have been guys that beat in under the rear seats to get chambered mufflers to fit better.
Something like this, could careless if its polished or not though:

i was thinking about cutting out that "bowled" sheet metal and replacing it with straight sheet.
I also had another idea... mounting mufflers in the back but crisscrossing them.
Im considering using 1 chamber flow masters now too, this TA sounds freakin awesome.
